diy flowers!!?

Lizz, 15 April, 2023 at 12:51 Posted on Planning 0 3
Anyone doing or got experience in doing their own flowers?! Where do you start? Is it practical for a non-trained person to do this or will I find it too difficult? Do you get them from markets or do you pick your own from farms?

I did my own flowers and it is very definitely possible, you just need to be prepared to invest plenty of time to practise and make sure it fits with your timeline for the run up to the wedding itself, as obviously it isn’t something you can do ages in advance.

I used Bloom & Wild. I did a few practise goes with cheaper supermarket bunches using online videos to help me, and then started ordering B&W bunches to make sure I liked the designs and could work out how far in advance to order them - I went with B&W because they arrive in bud so it buys you a little bit more time to prepare them.
After deciding which B&W design I was happy with, I did look up how much it would cost to order the stems separately direct from a nursery, and while the stems would have been a similar price, the foliage was pushing the price up, so I then stuck with ordering from Bloom & Wild.
I ordered 4 of the same bunch to be delivered on the Wednesday (my wedding was on a Saturday). On the day they were delivered I prepped all the stems and put them in a bucket of water in my garage. On the Thursday I selected the stems I wanted for the buttonholes - this was the most difficult part of the process and even though my husband said he loved his buttonhole, I still think I needed to do more practise to get it right.
On the Friday, I then made all the bouquets I needed - a bigger one for me, and smaller ones for each of my 3 bridesmaids. I put them back in the water and garage overnight, and on the morning of the wedding I took them out and put them on a towel about an hour before leaving the house so the stems would dry. This was also when I added ribbon to the stems.
In terms of pros, obviously it was significantly cheaper doing it this way. I also found it really mindful doing my own flowers and feel like I’ve developed skills that I will enjoy using again. Also I was so in love with the finished result, whenever anyone complimented my flowers (not knowing I did them myself) I felt amazing!
In terms of cons, it is of course something you can’t do far in advance, and that can cause some real anxiety. Ordering them from Bloom & Wild also meant I had to wait to see what they would have in stock in the run up to my wedding - I was lucky that they had something that worked perfectly with my colours. Like I said, buttonholes were challenging (and all of them ended up looking completely different). I also opted away from doing any floral displays, as I think this would have been beyond my skill level!

We made all our own flower arrangements. I used all artificial flowers, it was a lot cheaper then real and they could get made up in advance so we could practise
