DIY - Sweet Bar - ADVICE PLEASE!!

Nessa_EssexBride, 17 February, 2015 at 16:56 Posted on Planning 0 21

Hello everyone,

Just a quick one.

I'm doing my own sweet bar. I having it only for the evening. There's gonna be 130 guest for the evening.

Here's a picture of all my jars and bowls so far.

For those that are doing their own sweet bar or have done it before:

  • Where would you recommend getting sweets from?
  • What sweet bag size would you recommend? 5x7 or 6x9?

I've seen some sweets scoops on EBAY. £6 for 5. Still looking around, but I think that's the cheapest I've seen it.

Thanks in advance for all your comment.

Bye

    Hi again everyone,

The red circled jars I got from my 99p store in my area.

The rest of it, I got from ikea.

    Tall jars X2 =£3 each

Medium jars - beside the (TALL JARS) X6=£85p each

    Bowls X4=£1 each

Vase X2(at the front) =£1 each

    Everything cost me - £21.10

    Looks good so far!

I'm doing my own and have started with some jars, which I got from BHS They were on offer and I paid £25 for 5x small, 2x med, 2x large and 2x xlarge.

I looked on amazon for sweets as they seem pretty reasonably priced but I was going to head to my local Costco to look check their prices and also how many of what I need! I think it's easier to look at a bag of sweets and work out how many people that will feed than try and do it based on weight.

I haven't looked for scoops yet but there's a home bargains near us and I'm sure I've seen them selling them before - though I'm not sure how much for!

Do you need scoops? Would they fit in the taller jars?

Depending on what sweets you have, I love these mini-tongs:

or these from ikea at 40p each!

Or these green scoops for £1, but might be too big

We are getting sweets from Costco.

Have you tried car boot sales for bags, scoops and jars? I got 100 bags for 20p and scoops for £1 from a bride selling stuff off.

I was hoping to find someone with a costco card to go with me to get my sweets, haven't sorted bags, tongs or scopps yet but I was planning for all of mine to be in cut glass bowls, even unwrapped sweets, would this be ok, my thinking was that normal buffet food isn't covered up with lids but now thinking it might be a bit weird?

Hi lady's just a bit of advice, it is now a requirement by law to advertise allergens in food, so you might want to put a little sign up saying that the sweets may contain certain allergens such as nuts or gluten.

your venue should advise you on this

We're doing our own sweety table too but ours will be for less people.

I've just ordered our jars (8), scoops (2), tongs(2) and sweet bags (100 5X7bags) from ebay as a set for £22.

I've found sweetsforu.co.uk to be quite reasonable price wise, haven't ordered from them yet though.

Apologies for massive photos. These are the bowls, jars, trays, tongs and scoops I've collected for my chocolate buffet. I have lots more jars but don't think I'll need everything. The scoops and tongs are small and neat - much smaller than most. I like them as I think they look smart and will hopefully also discourage those who are inclined to be greedy. It took a long time to find the right things - some of the tongs I bought on holiday in Crete. The scoops were quite expensive but I think they were worth it - as a guide the scoop 'head' is approx the size of an egg.

Tiink - try home bargains or the range for the martini glass and apocathery jar. They often have those at reasonable prices.

My local home bargains had loads of great jars, fishbowls and vases the other day!

As well as a set of 3 scoops for 79p! I've bought a couple of sets of those, they are just clear plastic though! PErsonally I don't want an overly fancy sweet table I want it to be more like the sweet shops I remember when I was younger!

this is the sweet buffet i did for my little boys christening, i collected all the jars from car boot sales, all between 50p and £6 each.

sweet bags were a couple of pound off ebay and the scoops and tongs were from ebay too.

i am using them again for our wedding, but hiring a sweet cart for £40 to put it all on.

Getting the sweets from costco or bookers.

i have got yellow sweet bags for the wedding and have decorated a holder for them

Were having a sweetie table too, bought our scoops from home bargains 79p for 3! The glass jars are ones we've kept after using the contents or that we already own, sweets were going to have a look at Costco to see what we can get from there. Paper bags I bought on ebay, silly cheap and i've got a small wicker picnic style basket to put the bags/scoops in.

Not sure about decorating the rest of the table yet - love the balloons behind it but its the one thing were not allowed to have at our venue.

Try TK MAxx and Home Sense I have picked up some jars from there the most expensive being £5 for a massive jar. I am just buying when I see them as lots of places do them now.
