Dj cost

maxi-qu, 3 February, 2014 at 21:43 Posted on Planning 0 13

So sorry, I bet this has been asked a million times before..

I emailed my tog asking for recommendations for dj's. And she was really helpful and gave us a few, also went to a wedding fair and found a couple.

The one we met at the wedding fair has quotes us 375. The one recommended by our tog price list starts at 795 for 3 hours (we will need them for around 5 hours- after 3 hours it's charged 100 per hour) - and that is te basic package!

How much would you expect to pay for a dj from 7-12ish (approx times)

I'm so confused! Music is really important to me- but don't want to spend a huge amount (I also find dj's really cheesy so I'm finding it really hard to find a dj I like) (no offence to any dj's out there! I'd love to find a non cheesy one!) any recommendations for hampshire/Winchester wills be fab!

X

Wow, that's an expensive DJ!! You could probably get a band for a couple hundred more!!

We are paying £330 for ours for 5 hours inc up lighting and photos. He's the resident DJ at our venue but thankfully, he's brilliant!

The DJ recommended by my venue, and who we're planning on using, is £360 for 5 hours.

I'm no expert, but £795 seems really expensive to me?!

However, because music is important to you I guess it might be worth paying more if it gets you a better DJ.

Hope it all goes well and you find the right DJ soon! :-)

Phew glad it wasn't just me who found 795 to be expensive! I just can't see what the huge difference in price can be?! But then I don't want to be stuck with a rubbish dj, and have an empty dance floor all night (worst nightmare!) x

Is there a package difference between the two? As in the type of stuff he plays music on etc? Sorry I am not very technical with DJ stuff.

Go with the one that doesn't use the annoying laser lights I say ?

Our venue wanted £550 for their DJ. Needles to say we didn't book with them.

Ended up going with a friend of a friend who gave us a discount, he is normally £350, but charged us £300.

    Thats from 7.30 - 12

We paid £375 & that included him doing a comedy spot dressed as Elvis ( he did funny stories about some of the guests ) we had told him some facts about some guests beforehand. He was soooo good. He won stars in their eye a few years ago so was a good singer as well. We had him for 5 hours.

I think £795 is really expensive & I would shop around if I was you .

A standard DJ in London can be anything from £250 to £1000's but I think average is £400-£500.

The more expensive wedding DJ's should be experienced toastmaster and MC if that is what you need. That's not to say you wont find a great DJ at the lower end but get recommendations.

£795 does sound far too expensive, you could get a live band to play for a couple/few hundred more!

Ours would have been £250 for the evening but we only paid £200 as we had a band first and then he took over. We were really pleased with ours (he is in Surrey) as he played exactly the sort of music we asked for and very little chat, nothing cheesy. It was just one young guy who was not specifically a wedding DJ and I did wonder whether he would be brilliant or not due to his price but went ahead anyway as we had the band as well and I'm so glad we did as he was very professional. He sent all his licenses, PAT testing etc up front, kept in contact throughout the process to reassure me that all was well and even turned up early with the band so that they could set up their equipment around each other and provide a smooth transition (despite the fact that he had charged me less as he was only doing the latter part of the evening) so I would be very happy to recommend if anyone would like to ask.

DJs at the higher end of the scale are likely to have massive experience of weddings. They will talk to you about what you want and deliver it to your specification.

Before starting your search, have it clear in your own mind exactly what you want such as: no cheese, limited mic work or someone that knows how to get things going rather than just play music. We are all very different. Personally I'm not at all cheesy and don't play YMCA or the other action dances unless my couple request them..... but I do use the mic a lot to get the party going.

I know a lot of brides won't want to hear this.... but it needs saying. Booking the DJ through your hotel does not guarantee you are getting an experienced professional. There are some really bad practices out there such as charging the couple £350 for the DJ and then ringing round to find anyone who will do it for £150 so that they pocket the difference. The other problem with taking the resident DJ of a hotel is that not one DJ fits all. If you take the resident DJ without knowing what his style is, how do you know he is right for you.

I have many enquiries. After a brief conversation, I know whether I am right for that couple or not. If I'm not, I always turn it down and recommend a colleague that is. For example, I had a couple that made it clear they wouldn't want any mic work whatsoever and club classics all night..... so I put them in touch with a good friend who specialises in that kind of thing.

We have some great guys in your area. Pop an enquiry through our site here http://www.weddingdjalliance.co.uk/ and the guys who are available for your date will contact you with their details and price.
