Do Doctors treat tonsillitis these days?

fiorelli, 22 August, 2008 at 08:33 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

Have woken up with a rather sore tonsil and ear ache. Do I have to grin adn bear it, or will Dr prescribe anything? I am loath to take up an appointment for something that may not be treated.

Thanks.

If you have tonsillitis they should give you antibiotics. If it feels bad, go to the dr. Have you got white spots on your tonsils?

Thanks SpaceCadet, yes, the right side is sore, inflamed and pus-y?. Sore on swallowing (and in general actually). Pain radiating up through my ear. It's perfect timing as we go away for a week tomorrow!

I've had penicillin for tonsillitis before and you can also take regular painkillers as well

We were both given penicillin last week. It 'fixed' OH within a couple of days. It's eased mine but it's not gone yet.

I had really bad tonsillitis few months back (it was particularly sh1t as I was in the early stages of pregnancy too) and my throat was covered in white lumps, I got a 10 day dose of penicillin and also took soluble paracetamol which helped a lot and it felt much better within hours of starting the ABs. We'd booked for a few days away and I was well enough to go.

Hope you feel better soon ?

H woke me up on sunday morning with his wimpering, mum gave us a lift to the out-of-hours docs and he got some anti-biotics.. It's only today that he's feeling 75% better (obviously still plagued, you understand ?) so I'd say get thee to docs, and get some anti-biotics!

    Get better soon ?

Well, I went to the Doctors "I feel a bit silly coming actually Dr., I woke up this morning with what I think is the start of Tonsillitis, but I go on holiday tomorrow."

Dr. "Okay, I understand, where are you going? open... Say 'ah'" tap, tap, tap... Are you allergic to penicillin? No? Here's a prescription, you can pick it up at any chemist. Leave it 24-48 hours though to see if it gets any worse"

Less than 3 minutes in Drs. room.

I still feel silly about going, but at least I know that I can take something for it soon should it get any worse.

Thanks for replying to me earlier all.

TBH if the doc reckoned you had the beginnings of Tonsillitis, I'd start taking the penicillin straight away..

Many cases of tonsillitis are viral, not bacterial. Antibiotics will not help to treat viral tonsillitis.

I suffer from it usually twice a year. Massive doses of Vit C, lots of fluid (hot blackcurrant) and decongestants are more likely to shorten the symptoms in my experience.

Get thee some Chloraseptic throat spray from the chemists, it was a Godsend when I had glandular fever and couldnt actually swallow my own spit (and always helps when I get the beginings of a sore throat)

If you're going on hols you can collect the scrip and take it with you for in case it gets worse. But as the doc says worth waiting to see, a/bs can really knock you out so best not to take if not essential. Tyrozets are very good, they contain an anaesthetic which will soothe the soreness and a mild antibiotic as well so worth picking those up. Get some vit C caps as well to boost your levels a bit. I'd suggest berocca but it would probably hurt your throat. Hope you're OK for your hol.

When I had it a few years ago I found gargling with Oraldene worked miracles.
