Do i need canapes?

Stephanie, 18 January, 2022 at 13:51 Posted on Planning 0 4

I'm wondering if I actually need canapes at our drinks reception. We're having a small (22 person) wedding with the ceremony at 4pm, cocktails, photos and lawn games 4.30-6.30 and then dinner at a restaurant at 7pm. I originally was thinking that people won't need canapes as people don't normally eat at that time anyway but now I'm worried I'll end up with a crowd of hangry guests! Any advice?

After seeing 100s of canapés at weddings I can say that they are not intended to stop people from feeling hungry or even to "keep them going" if anything they may end up making people feel even more hungry.

Don't get me wrong I think they are great but don't think that they are to feed people - as such.

Some are more "canapéy" than others as some can be little snacks like a cone of chips.

I would say you don't need them, just stick to the drinks. By the time your ceremony is done and you do your photos with group shots it will be a small timeframe until you then eat and it may feel like you are cramming them in before the meal at 7. if I were a guest with your timings I wouldn't expect to eat until the meal and would make sure I had a good lunch or snack before attending.

No you don’t “need them”. Have I added them onto our wedding even though we didn’t need them … yes 😅. But they really aren’t needed and sounds like you’ve got some other great things for your guests Smiley smile x

I think because your ceremony is at 4pm, people will have had time to eat a proper lunch so are unlikely to be hungry. We're having them, but that's because our ceremony is at 1pm so guests will arrive around 12:30 likely only having had a bunch or even just breakfast so we feel like people would appreciate a snack!

Alternatively, could you get some low cost snacks in like crisps or popcorn that you could buy in cheap bumper packs from the supermarket but lay out in pretty bowls?
