Do I need to inform the tax people that im married?

*Kitty*, 23 September, 2008 at 21:31 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

My mum and I were discussing income tax and she says that married couples used to get an allowance and that it might be worth phoning to find out? Does anyone have any knowledge about this?

Thanks

The only reason to contact them is if you changed your name and you can generaly do this via your HR department at work.

Hmm, following on from this (sorry to highjack thread but there's a tenuous link coming)

I got married in May and want to change name. Where do I start? Is there a specific order, for example, should I wait for passport before doing bank details, etc? Also, will I have to pay for a new passport or just make an amendment to my current one?

    Ta! x

No real order to be honest. You can do bank details, etc. with just your marriage certificate. If you didn't get a copy at the time, go and get one. £3.50 and well worth it so you don't have to post the original off to the passport people. Do your passport before you do your driving licence though - when you do the form for the driving licence, you can tick a box for them to contact the passport office and then you don't have to send them any supporting documents.

As baron said the MCA was abolished some years ago. You can still get some if you're really old though.

The MCA used to be given for the whole of the tax year in which you married, explains why loads of people (including my parents) got married on 4th April- it used to get you an extra year's allowance.

That is if you didn't change your passport first (you get a form that the registrar or minister signs before the ceremony that goes in with your application) And you still have to pay £72 for your new passport (even for the name change)
