Do i need Wedding Insurance? Is it a waste of money?

Niomi, 22 July, 2022 at 19:22 Posted on Planning 0 16

I see a lot of suppliers contracts advising that I should have wedding insurance, can anyone let me know the pros and cons of this? Also is this a waste of money or do you think I should consider it? I have just finalised all my suppliers this month so just wondering if this is something to do or not or if it's just going to rack up my budget even more! Smiley atonished

I am intrigued to know the answer here as I actually took out wedding insurance as all of my contacts were informing/advising me too!

I looked into insurance when we started planning but I found that a lot of companies have stopped selling wedding insurance since Covid. Of those that still did, hardly any policies offered cover for Covid so I'm impressed you found one.

I did get insurance after a lot of research. Lots of places, probably the better ones, have stopped doing wedding insurance since covid, and the ones i found didn't cover covid when i brought mine last year. From the reviews i saw it seems like a lot of them aren't great at paying out when they should do. In the end i decided i would prefer to have the insurance if something went wrong, even if it would be a hassle to get money back from them.

Thanks Rachel! Yes that is my fear but looks like it’ll be a struggle to find an insurance company now

I got insurance recently too! It provides cover if a supplier goes into administration or fails to attend on the day (there’s always a small chance a supplier could have a vehicle breakdown or emergency) and there’s some cover for loss/theft/damage of key items like rings and outfits. It doesn’t cover covid related issues, except if the bride/groom or an immediate family member were severely ill with covid, which prevented their attendance at the wedding. Like others have said, it might be hassle if we had to make a claim, but I feel better knowing we’ve got some insurance in place!

Worth checking the wording on suppliers in administration because most suppliers are soul traders and as such there is no going into administration as that is just for LTD companies. A soul trader will just decide to pack it all in and stop.

This may come under the trader not turning up but to qualify for any insurance they first might not have to turn up and you make a claim afterwards but that would still leave you without that section of your supplier on the day.

That supplier may of already refunded you any payments but what you need the insurance to cover is any extra money that a replacement supplier might now cost over the original one.

Thanks so much for this! I'll definitely pay more attention to the small print in all my contracts.

We got insurance which covered lots of different things you wouldn’t usually think of, for example if the photographer is ill or the equipment is faulty and images are lost it covers the cost of you going back to the venue and re-taking the photos on a different day!

A relative of a close friend took out insurance three weeks before her wedding as she was advised to, and thankfully she did as the dress shop went bust and her dress went ‘missing’. It was definitely worth the £150-£260 spent!

I got married this Saturday and didn’t have any insurance, we were worried about covid mainly and we had 4 daytime drop outs (only one had covid) and 4 evening drop outs. I wasn’t bothered about the evening ones as we were only doing bacon baps etc but I did get annoyed at the daytime ones as they were £100 per head. I negotiated with the venue to have extra wine and they were great about that. Most of my suppliers had covid clauses in their own contracts, such as providing an alternative date or person to fulfil the service.
I didn’t find a decent insurance company that had a covid clause so I didn’t bother. We were lucky we all went ahead ok. Good luck
