Do we need to give notice at venue location or locally?

Jamie, 1 January, 2022 at 10:50 Posted on Planning 1 3
I'm still very new to wedding planning, and I'm sure this has been asked before...

But I'm so confused! We're planning to get married in Scotland, hopefully at Loch Lomond. However, we live in Norfolk.
The whole giving notice thing seems contradictory to me - some sites say we need to give notice in our local area. Others say we need to do it in Scotland. And then other sites use different terms - marroage schedule, notice, registration, license...
Any help on what's correct and where we actually have to do these bits and where would be much appreciated!

You will definitely need to give notice to the authority area in which you live and pay council tax to at least 30 days before the wedding date. Regards Scotland, there may be requirements that differ from England so maybe ask your venue if you need to do anything different as your are npt residents of Scotland, assume they will book registrar for you so should be able to help or put you in touch with the right people in Scotland

I am in a similar situation to yourself as we are not marrying locally.

As Charlotte has mentioned, it is your local registry office you need to give notice at. Separately from this, it is the registry office nearest to your venue that you will book the wedding (registrar) with!

I was getting very confused around this, and managed to speak to a registrar who was incredibly helpful with explaining everything so it may be worth doing the same if you are able to get in contact with them.

Okay, that makes sense... I definitely think it's worth having a chat with someone about, because we're using a legal celebrant we've found not a registrar (although I'm still not sure if that's the same thing?).
