I went to see a psychic a few years ago and then just before I got wed.
I was quite sceptical and didnt know what to expect.
It was all very weird. The first time was all about my mother - she passed away 11 years ago now from breast cancer. She told me that she no longer has to wear her wig as she has lovely hair now 'up there'.
She also told me several other things that she couldnt possibly have known.
When i went just before the wedding, what she told me was astounding. She told me that Mr Tarts dad Colin (she named him) will be there (she knew I was getting wed and what month) watching us and will be so proud. She said that he would like Mr T to wear 2 roses in his buttonhole, one for him too and that he will try his best to help him with his crevat as he knows he will be useless at it.
She said that as my nan had also passed (we never got on), she would like to say sorry for certain views that she had expressed when she was alive - spot on, but would rather not say what went on. My nan and mum were apparantly 'thrashing out' their diferences up there too over buckets of tea as they both drunk gallons when down here.
She said that my sister in America was fine but a little 'snowed under'. My sister was in Boston at the time on holiday with heavy snow and couldnt get a flight back home.
She also knew that my mum had 10 children and I myself had lost a baby when I was 18. She went as far as to say that my mum had my little boy with her.
She said that my mum was beside me brushing my hair - something she loved to do even up until I was 20.
All of a sudden she asked me if I heard that. When I said what, she said that my mum just called me. I just laughed and forgot about it but when I replayed the tape a few months later - as clear as a bell, my mums voice called my nickname. Now, when I play the tape it's gone. I was doing the washing up at the time and just froze with shock.
I can't remember other things but I couldnt believe how accurate this woman was.
I have an appointment with her at the end of April and am actually looking forward to it.
I'm no fool and do not live my life by what this woman has said in the past and she certainly didnt pick on the fact that I was grieving and heard what I wanted to as mum had died years before and I was by no means upset iyswim. I wasnt a member of any facebook or sharing group at the time so ruled out that she had googled me!
I just wondered whether anyone believes in the afterlife and spirit world.
Do you have any stories to tell?

So has anything bad ever happened to you or any of your siblings?

    I assume not?

In answer to the original question - I believe in some kind of life after death and that 'there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy', I guess. I am deeply sceptical about most mediums and psychics. Though I keep an open mind. Am interested in cold reading though, I must read some more about it.

Does anyone know of any good books?

Of course bad things have happened to us, she cannot shield us from anything, but in certain situations she has been able to steer us in a certain direction. My personal view obviously.

Even if it is a figment of her imagination, she is not hurting anyone.
If you get comfort from this sort of thing then continue with it, just dont live your life by it.

Its easy to mock this sort of thing if you havent lived with it or have faith in it. Same as religion and politics.

How is being skeptical because there is no evidence for psychic powers - depsite Randi's incentive and so on - the same as despairing over the political process?

Can you form a whole sentence without a meaningless pseudobabble platitude?

However, I do believe Derren Brown is a very clever man, and a valuable friend to the rational community.

Jess, if you're interested in the cold reading stuff, I think Ian Rowland is the man to read.

I believe in something but not sure to what extent. I visited a psychic about 3 years ago and she told me things no-one could have known. Changed my view on it.

Que? How can you not belive in politics? It can clearly be proven to exist, unlike spirit guides and ghosties.

But it is perfectly easy to prove, the problem is that countless psychics have failed to demonstrate their ability under controlled conditions.

As a scientist, I merely await evidence supporting the hypothesis before being converted.

I consider this to be quite the opposite of naive.

Depends which "this" you are looking to prove.

So-called psychics, I'd agree with you. But the OP asked "I just wondered whether anyone believes in the afterlife and spirit world?" which I don't think you can prove either way.

Because the idea of cold reading is that they can pick up on your body language signals. You may not have told anyone, but you knew and therefore may have reacted to certains cues from her.?

    id="quote">

How do you prove a negative?
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. None of the claims to contact the dead can be tested empirically, and despite James Randi's long-standing offer of $1m to anyone who CAN do it under scientific conditions, no one in the last 30 years has been able to do so.

Add to the equation Occam's razor - the simplest explanation is the most likely. If you can replicate (and indeed improve on) the effects of the readings by trickery, cold reading, hot reading, body lanaguage etc, why would you suppose that there is anything more to it than that. Basically, if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck &walks like a duck, why would you suppose it's a raccoon in disguise?

"Comforting lies for the criminally gullible" imo. It appalls me that these charlatans can make money out of exploiting the grief of others, it disgusts me that it's dressed up as entertainment in the form of Most Haunted etc. it revolts me that we do not prosecute these people for fraudulent earnings.
