Do you buy christmas presents for nephews/neices?

July, 7 December, 2008 at 22:26 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 21

We buy OHs two sisters and his bil and his son. My side we buy just the kids, their parents buy us a wee gift from them. My step nephew is now 18 and have bought him a present. My other sil has said she is buying him a present this year but it will be his last.

Also my younger brother (step brother), he is 20. I still buy a present for him (never received so much as a card from him), so my other brothers have said he isn't getting anything anymore. I don't expect any presents from him, but a card would be nice or even a tin of chocolates, etc. She thinks I'm "aff ma heid" to still be spending so much on him and my step nephew.

It's the same with his birthday, I was the only one that got him a birthday card and present. Not even my dad and step mum got him anything on his birthday, so I feel kinda sorry him, that he doesn't get much. Mind you, my dad and step mum are like that with everyones birthdays. I haven't had a card or present from them for a few years now.

So what age do you stop buying for neices and nephews?

My nieces are only little and we spend a lot on them - we don't have kids of our own and we probably over-indulge them a bit?. I can't imagine NOT buying for them though _ I'm looking forward to them being old enough to enjoy girly shopping trips.

It's about time the grown-up kids in your family started to contribute to Christmas as adults though, even if it was only token gifts or cards.

Yes we buy for nieces & newphew and just a token gift for their parents. In my family uncles / aunts gave presents up to 21 then just send cards - my mum has replaced buying for her niece / nephew with buying for their children - and the cycle goes on!

I was discussing this the other night with OH. Apart from my step nephew, my other nephews and neice are all under 12. But as I said to OH if we stop it for one, we need to stop for the rest (when they reach the same age). He said that would depend if they bought us a present (as mentioned above - a card, tin of chocolates). We aren't expecting them to go and spend a fortune but just something would be nice.

As OH only has one aunt on his mums side, him and his sisters all buy for her and she buys us.

I still get gifts from my aunties & uncles and I'm 33. I've never bought for them but then my parents still buy for their kids (none of them under 21 now) so I guess it works out (although I wouldn't be bothered if they stopped).

I buy for my nieces and nephews as they are all still young. I don't buy for their parents though and they don't buy for me, just the kids - we just do cards to each other. I do buy for my younger (childless) brother and sister though. On my Mum's side my aunties and her decided to stop doing gifts at 21 or when the niece or nephew had a child of their own so my aunties now buy for my kids instead of me.

On Gray's side though they don't buy for nieces or nephews and never have done. I find it odd personally (especially because there's loads of us so I could have understood my aunties drawing a line, but there's only about a dozen of his family in total), but it's the way they've always done it. BIL and his wife felt that they'd missed out last year when they spent Christmas Day here and seen the fun my siblings had giving my children gifts and have bought gifts this year and found it much more fun than they thought.

I used to buy for all my nieces and nephews, but I have stopped for my brother's kids. They are grown up and live on their own and have never even sent me a card for Christmas//birthday/ wedding etc. The final straw was when my 22 year old niece did not even sent a card to acknowledge my only child's birth and then first birthday.

So my Christmas list is getting smaller!

Yes, I buy for nieces and nephews although they are all 8 or under. I don't buy for their parents (my siblings).

As a neice I still get presents from my aunties and uncles (I'm 27) H usually gets one aswell. We buy for most of the cousins (11-23 and still at home, the grown up cousins get a card, we rarely get one back), aunties and uncles get chocs and wine

We buy for our nieces and nephews, but we don't buy for their parents. It was agreed when H's brother and sister had their little ones that we would only buy for the little ones.

H's Uncle and Aunt still buy presents for both of us and we are 32 & 37 respectively.

I have 2 neices, one is my sisters little girl and one is BIL little girl. We don't buy for BIL but I buy for my sister.

I can't imagine stop buying for my sisters little girl when she is 18 as we are so close to her but if we do it for her then would have to for the others.

As a neice/nephew in our family we got presents until we were 18 then they stopped as it was too expensive as there were so many of us.

    niece 17 money

    nephew 13 money

    gah! It's allabout the money!

The rest of the "kids" we buy for are friends children and are still little enough to be getting toys, so toys it is!

I only have 2 nieces at the moment. In fact it's the first christmas I'll have had 2 - they are 18 months and 1 respectively. My brother's and BIL's girls. There's going to be at least one new child by next Christmas all being well.

I buy both token presents. Both their sets of parents are a lot better off than we are and they have everything they could ever need or want already so it's hard for me to buy for them.

Currently we buy for all the parents too. I hope soon that my other BIL and his wife will have babies (they are trying) and when they're all familied up, I'd quite like to suggest we all forgo presents from one another and just buy for the children.

I don't know how that will go down though as my brother is a big kid (got cross that my mum wanted to stop doing him a 'stocking' at the age of 33!)

We buy for my niece, who's 20, and she sends us a card and sometimes a little gift, depending on how her finances are. We also buy for both my nephews, one is 3 years and the other is 10 months. We spend about £20 on each of them, although for my niece it's usually in the form of vouchers whereas we get proper gifts for the boys.

In previous years we have exchanged gifts with my brother and his wife (boys' parents) and with my sister (niece's mother), but this year we're a bit skint after paying for the wedding so have agreed not to exchange with my siblings (brother and wife expecting third baby and sister just bought a house, so all in same situation money wise) or with H's brother (who was just made redundant).

As a niece, I still get presents from my aunts and uncles and they buy for H too. H doesn't get from aunts and uncles on his dad's side, and hasn't for as long as I've known him, but we both get gifts from his mum's brother.

I don't buy for my aunt and uncle but they do sometimes give me a present, usually though we stick to presents for the children - we have two each so I guess it works out 'fair'.

I encourage my children to make/choose token gifts for most of the adults in our family though and they like handing out the biscuits/bags/photos or whatever we have 'done' that year, although I do wonder if people actually do like getting things made by the children or if I am just being a tweepushymum.

I always think its better just to give as much as you can without counting what you get 'back' - we have some v over generous family members and we have some very stingy ones too, but lifes too short to hold 'present grudges' - it makes for a wearying Christmas. Instead I just look forward to our annual present-returning trip after going to FILs. Last year we had an ice crushing machine. It didn't even make ice it just crushed it for cocktails, which of course was very handy for a breastfeeding parent of a 2 & 1 year old. ?

    You CHILD ?

tbh I think I am only cross with him because my parents just can't afford it and he is well off.

My debut is on Christmas Eve. I am crapping myself. I still can't work out what we're all going to wear. Just told JK and she peed herself laughing,

    WMJS. ?

The things in my stocking aren't particularly expensive. I tend to get things like shampoo, chocolate, a cd etc. I love my stocking and always open it first. ?

No, I have 8 of them and tbh even if I spend £10 on them that'll £80 that I don;t get to spend on my own children. My siblings feel the same so there is no harm done. I do buy them birthdya gifts through, normally a £10 voucher in a card although my oldest nephew is turning 18 next year and I should imagine £10 gift isn't going to go too far down the pub!

I don't have a niece or nephew until Feb time next year, however we have gone a bit mad and bought a few baby bits and pieces which i've wrapped up to give SIL for christmas.

It will be my first niece/nephew so i'm sure they'll get spoiled.

I know when i was little we used to get presents off uncles and aunties until we were about 16 then we didn't get them anymore.
