Do you have conservatory roof blinds? Recommendations please.

We had a lean-to conservatory extension built a couple of years ago. It's great for the extra space, but it becomes unusable in the summer. In fact it gets so hot in there, it ends up heating up the rest of the downstairs too.

I've been looking at getting roof blinds to cut out the heat, but it seems the only way to get prices is to have companies come to your house to measure up and provide you with a specialist service.

Do you have roof blinds? If so are they effective and how much as a rough guide would I be looking to pay? My H was thinking it would cost about £600/£700, I told him that he was way out and it would more likely be about £2,000. I'm a bit wary about having people over to quote just because of the hard sell we may get. If you can offer any advice or any useful information it would really be appreciated.

Thanks

We had Thomas Sanderson come out to us and quote for some shutters, I thought it would be all hard sell etc. but in reality they were lovely. They're doing a 3 for 2 offer at the moment I think too, so you could come out better than you think.

Oh excellent, thanks. That's who I've booked my appoinment with so it's reassuring to know they won't be pressuring me.

Did you go for the shutters and do they make a difference?

Ours are wooden shutters for the patio doors rather than a conservatory, and they are gorgeous, I love them. Have made a huge difference. I think their conservatory people and the interior house people have different products but we were shown lots of different things we could have had.

The brochure came through the post yesterday, but I haven't had a chance to go through it yet, but that's something for me to do tonight. We put 'wooden' Ikea blinds across the windows and the doors and while it does maintain privacy it doesn't make any difference to the heat. In fact it gets so hot that if I'm there for more than a couple of minutes I get palpatations!

Have absolutely no idea and could be talking complete guff but I wouldn't have thought that wood would be the best material for a conservatory because it retains heat (think of swedish saunas).

D'uh! Didn't think about that when we had it done. I doubt there's much real wood in them anyway! Hopefully with the roof sorted it shouldn't get so bad.

We had pleated roof blinds fitted in our conservatory last year, they were essential for us really as we use our conservatory as an office and bright sunlight was stopping us seeing our computer screens properly.

We got a local company to come around and give us a price. We'd used them for all our other blinds and was really happy.

The guy said the price depends entirely on the roof of your conservatory, apparently if you've got lots of angles in your roof then it's a lot more expensive. Our conservatory has a simple sloping roof (no angles) so was straightforward. We paid just over £700 for them. I honestly can't recommend them enough. We still find that the heat warms up our whole downstairs, but the conservatory is bearable now and we can see our screens!

Thanks for that. Do you mind me asking where-abouts you live? £700 sounds excellent and we also have a sloping roof, did you go for internal or external blinds? If it's local to me I'd love to get the name of the company you used.

We haven't got roof blinds in our conservatory, but we did use Thomas Sanderson for the window blinds, and I didn't find them to be hard sellers at all.
