Do you leave your wireless router switched on all the time?

kylieanne, 19 February, 2009 at 21:24 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

We've just gone wireless, but I'm not sure whether I should leave the router switched on when we're not online, or should it be switched off? If I switch it off each time after use, is it going to be much slower to start up when I need to get online? What do you do?

I switch mine off. I don't know what sort of electricity it uses, but I feel better reducing its consumption when I'm not using it. I also turn my computer off, which means that when I want to use it I fire the router up first and by the time the computer is running all the internet connections have been remade. So it doesn't take me any longer to start up, given I'm having to turn the laptop on anyway.

It also means I know there is no hacking going on while I'm not using it. I'm sure those more technically competent could explain that with a current anti-virus system it is fine either way, but to my simple understanding effectively pulling the plug out gives me comfort.

We leave ours on. My parents used to turn theirs off (for electricity purposes) but it was causing connection problems when they turned it back on so now Mum doesn't bother and has no problems anymore.

Ours stays on all the time, it's all securely encryted though so nobody can get in to it....in fact at one point just after we moved even we couldn't connect to the ruddy thing it was that super secure!

We've got a laptop so it gets switched off but does stay on charge over night.

We always switch ours off, although H assures me that no one can get into it. To me its about saving a little bit of electricity rather than anything else. I've never had any problems with connectivity. I turn the broadband on and then the pc and by the time the pc has fired up its ready to use.

We always unplug ours. It saves electricity and is more secure. Occasionally we have trouble connecting first time but it's very quick to start up so unplugging and restarting doesn't take long to fix it.

My parents leave theirs on all the time but only since BT b*gg**ed up their phone line so they have problems reconnecting now if it's unplugged.

I would definitely start by always switching it off/unplugging and only change to leaving it on all the time if you have big problems connecting when you want to.

Yes, it is on all of the time. Needs to be as H often messes about on his IPod and connects to whatever the apple internet thing is called. We have to turn it off occasionally though as it needs to reset itself - we've found the internet to not work because of it before.
