Do you put tomatoes in your shepherds pie?

Sunset21, 2 December, 2008 at 15:52 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 33

Just looking at online recipes some chefs just put in tomato puree which i've already done, others use tinned toms. Do you put tinned toms in yours? I feel my mince mixture needs a bit more 'tang'!

No, just some puree and worcestershire sauce. Tabasco is good for a bit of tang.

I don't - I use tomato puree. I'd worry that with tomatoes in, the mince would be too wet and the potato topping would sink!

I put both chopped tomatoes and a bit of puree in as well (plus onion, garlic, worcestershire sauce, bit of dried rosemary and some beef stock).

I don't have Tabasco but I think I've been stingy with the Worcester Sauce, I might just add some more, or maybe some brown sauce.

I quite often put tomatoes in. The essence of SP is lamb with mashed potatoes on top- if that's what you have, it ain't no moussaka

Ah but traditionally Shepherd's Pie is made with lamb; cottage pie is with beef.

I don't think there was debate over Sheperds Pie being made with anything other than lamb, otherwise it'd be cottage pie, I just think Soph is saying if it is lamb mince and there's tomatoes in there then it's a moussaka.

So you don't put tomato puree in yours either Sophie?

I only make Cottage pie (try finding ground lamb in the supermarket over here...) and sometimes I add tomatoes. In fact, I made 2 last time (one for a friend who was coming out of hospital) and the one I made her I put tomatoes, peas, carrots, onion, garlic, beef stock and plain Bisto granules. It was fabulous. Mine was crap in comparison. And I put cheese on the top and made it go bubbly under the grill. It looked and smelt so good, I got a little tear in my eye. I made H admire it.

There was some filling left over which I ate and it was delicious, so yes to tomatoes if using beef.

Yes | know but Sophie was saying that lamb with tomatoes is good so you could say that if you were making traditional shepherd's pie then you could use tomatoes!!? ...Not that I would however![

    Noooo, that's just wrong.

However, I do put a squirt of ketchup and a very large squirt of HP sauce in, as well as Worstershire sauce.

If you think tomatoes are bad, here are some examples from an American website on their best ever shepherd's pie recipes:

    Submitted by: Jade Chaput-Vondette

    Ingredients:

1 lb. ground beef (cooked and drained)
1 c. mixed veggies (canned or frozen)
1 can cream of mushroom soup

    Directions:

Mix the first three ingredients together, then mash 6 cooked potatoes (season as usual) and spread on top, then shred sharp cheddar cheese on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. ENJOY!

    Danni's Shepherd's Pie
    Submitted by: Steve and Danni

    Ingredients:

    1-2 lb. ground beef
    1 can sweet corn
1 can French style green beans
1 can cream of mushroom soup
Mashed potatoes prepared (flake or homemade)
    Shredded cheese

The generic brands all work great.

    Directions:

Brown the ground beef, drain, then add the soup. Keep on low heat for a few minutes, then add the veggies. I use a cast iron skillet so there is only one pan. Cover the beef and veggies with potatoes, then top with cheese. Bake in a 350-degree oven until cheese is melted.

Why do our American friends insist on putting condensed soup into everything? ? It's usually in a 'crock pot' too. Bleurgh.
