do you tip your cleaner at Christmas?

Clairy, 16 December, 2008 at 15:21 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

Argh, I hate this sort of thing.

We use an agency, but always have the same girl and she's lovely. We've even met her family and they're all lovely. I don't know her well enough to call her a friend, but we are fond of her. I hadn't got her a Christmas present, and it seems they struggle on a low wage, so I didn't know what to do.

So I put £10 in a Christmas card because that was all I could afford at the moment (and had on me) ? I wrote a nice thank you note inside the card too, saying how much we appreciate her help.

So do you tip? And is £10 embarrassingly little? ? I have no idea what she's paid, but I pay the agency £9 per hour.

I'm never organised so always forget it the last clean before Christmas till I'm about to leave for work and invariably end up leaving cash if I've got enough on me or grabbing a bottle of wine or something.

I gave my cleaner her weekly wage again (£20), plus a nice hessian bag thing that I got as a GWP from the Body Shop, with various soaps and other bits and pieces in it.

We give ours a little gift, she's gong to back to Poland for Christmas and said it's really cold, so I've bought her a hat, scarf & glove set as she says she keeps forgetting to buy them.

We only quite recently got a cleaner and we pay her directly but I believe it's just a bit of cash in hand to her and I usually drop her at the pub afterwards ?

I have to pick her up and take her hom (or pub after) so don't feel so bad about paying her so little but will definitely buy her something or give her some money for christmas (though we also gave her our old TV so I think she's doing ratehr well out of it) not an awful lot (maybe £5-£10) but probably would give her £20 or so had she been here longer.

I think £10 is fine - I'm sure a lot fo people don't give anything at all!

I'm not sure what to do. We have 2 women that come in every 4 weeks (from an agency) for a 'deep clean'. I've never been home when they come and so have never met them but have swapped notes and they are very good (and trustworthy). They only started working for us about 6 months ago though.

Was thinking £20 and a bottle of wine but then i realised there's two of them so that'll cost me nearly £60. Ouch. Ah well, it is Christmas!

We've got some chocolates and a bottle of champagne for ours, she's been with us nearly 2 years and is very good. I imagine your lady will be very grateful for anything extra as I'm sure lots of people don't.

I was just going to ask the same thing! Our cleaner is round at the moment and it will be the last time we see her this year. She's only been with us 5 weeks (through an agency) so as we don't know her that well I've just slipped £10 in her Christmas card. Next year though (if I am organised enough) I will get her a little pressie.

It is a really hard call though - I've been fretting about it all day!

    I think £10 sounds fine.

My MIL works as a cleaner, although she has a small, select number of clients who she has worked for for years. Most of them seem to really appreciate her, and treat her as one of the family - to the point where one of her elderly clients has her listed as an 'in case of emergency' contact. She does very well at Christmas, with chocolates, biscuits and wine as well as a bit of extra cash.

I'm thinking about putting £20 in a card for our cleaner. We have got a random bottle of wine which I was going to give him, but I think the money will be more appreciated

Speaking as someone who has a close friend who is a cleaner/PA and all round good guy for about 13 clients (who all treat her like an elderly retainer), cash is never a bad idea ? As she's self employed, and keeps proper books, the only way she ever gets a break is if she gets a bit of extra cash that enables her to do it. So think of it more as an hour (or whatever) your cleaner doesn't have to work. I think my friend sometimes wishes she got fewer crates of expensive white, and more days off in fact.

We gave our cleaner £50 - she does two hours a week for £50 a month, which is so cheap, and she works hard.
