Documentation for giving notice - German marrying British

Zoe, 26 September, 2022 at 16:20 Posted on Etiquette and Advice 0 5
Hi all,

Hopefully someone can offer some insight as we’re getting mixed messages and info online.
My fiancé is a German citizen with a German passport but has settled status. I am British and we live here in the UK. Although we are having a symbolic ceremony in Italy we will do all the legalities either here in the UK or over in Germany. But we haven’t decided if one is going to be easier or more beneficial than the other.
What documentation would we need to provide for giving notice in each country and what would need to be translated?
Some websites say passport is fine along with proof of settled status, but some say birth certificate, another said even mother’s birth certificate and that would need to be translated. Also an affidavit/free to marry which needs to be translated too?
Has anyone experience this before and could help provide a clear list of what we may need?
Happy to provide more info, but would be grateful if a bit of guidance if possible Smiley smile

Accuracy and correctness of translation are key. Any document submitted to official authorities must be translated legally correctly to avoid delays. In such cases, it's convenient to turn to professional localization services that specialize in official and legal documents. You can check this out . They can translate certificates, contracts, and other documents while preserving all legal nuances and terminology, which is especially important in international divorce proceedings. Using such services saves time and reduces the risk of errors, and also provides peace of mind: you know your documents will be accepted in any jurisdiction. With professional localization, you can focus on the divorce process itself, without being distracted by bureaucratic details.

We went through something very similar and the information online can definitely be confusing. In our experience, getting the legal marriage done in the UK Drift Hunters was more straightforward if you already live there, but Germany can require more documents and certified translations (often birth certificates, certificates of no impediment, and sometimes additional family documents).

For giving notice as a German marrying a British citizen, Wikipedia notes that international marriages often require official identification, proof of residence or settled status, and sometimes birth certificates or affidavits, with translations certified when needed. It’s always best to check the specific requirements of the local registry, whether in the UK or Germany, to ensure all documents are accepted without delays. Similarly, just like preparing accurate paperwork for marriage, completing your NBI clearance correctly ensures a smooth and hassle-free process.

I feel your pain! My partner is German and the whole process of getting the 'Ehefähigkeitszeugnis' and dealing with the UK notice was a total nightmare. Honestly, the paperwork is enough to kill any romantic vibe before the wedding even happens.

If you guys get as stressed as we did, you’ll definitely need a break from all the legal talk. We actually started looking for some 'distractions' to keep things fun during the planning phase and found lustx.com . It’s a pretty cool adult site for dating and spicy content honestly, a great way to remind yourselves that you’re a couple, not just two people filing tax and marriage forms

Hi all, just updating this follow us getting married back in May 2024!

We decided to do the legalities in UK as we are living here and it was actually very straight forward! As my now husband had settled status we were able to just follow the same journey as UK nationals. We made the appointment at our local registry office to declare the intention before, provided our IDs, my husband provided his settle status code and then we had the usual meeting with the officials in the registry office.
    Actually very stress free!
