Does anyone know of a deconsecrated church in South East England?

Jose, 25 September, 2011 at 23:46 Posted on Planning 0 6

I would like to get married in a church but without the 'religious bits'. Does anyone know of a church in Sussex or Kent that we could hire?

thanks for your help

ohhh because they are fabulously amazingly beautiful buildings!

I want to get married in a church but wont as I am aethist. I do however absolutely love the architecture of churches and love them for their beauty - I have visited churches and other religious buildings the world over as I just love their beauty!

I think it is relatively rare to be able to use a deconsecrated church for a civil wedding in England. The law states that civil marriages must have no religious content whatsoever.

We got married in a register office, but we had our reception in a deconsecrated church. It was very clear that no (legal) marriage ceremonies could be performed there. The website is here if you're interested: https://www.landmarkartscentre.org/venue-hire/weddings/

Yes, there's Bilsington Priory in Kent. The priory isn't consecrated anymore so you can only have a civil ceremony. http://www.bilsingtonprioryestate.co.uk/

We own a church in Somerset that is deconsecrated and have a civil wedding license, so couples are able to get legal married without the religious part . We cannot technically call it a church but you cannot disguise it . visit : glastonburyweddingvenue.co.uk
