Does anyone know where I could buy tamarind water ?

Cloudybay, 6 November, 2008 at 18:16 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

I am making a spice/cooking hamper for my brother for Christmas. I have bought him a couple of cookbooks to go with it and want to buy him some tamarind water. I know you can make it yourself but I wondered if you could buy it ready made as I have no idea where to buy tamarind.

Also can you think of some essential spices for indian cookery or ones you would consider must haves. I have already bought some from looking at the books but personal recomendations from people who cook indian food would be great.

Thank you.

You can buy tamarind paste in the supermarket, or at least you can round here. Or try your indian grocers shop. It comes in a tub

I bought a tamarind block from tesco. Its about 6cm x3cm and is a sticky pulp wrapped in cellophane. To use it you add 4 tablespoons to 2ml of water and let it soften for 20minutes.

In regard to spices, I would buy some cardamon pods, tumeric, fenugreek seeds, cinnamon sticks, dried chillis and a good curry powder. That should give him a good basis to start from.

Thank you Rosencrantz, I shall go to Tesco this weekend and have a look. Thank you for the hints about the spices too, I shall add them to the list. x
