Does freezing wine remove the alcohol?

Smiley, 31 October, 2008 at 21:51 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

I know cooking does, but, what about freezing?

At wine level concentrations, the water freezes out, leaving neat alcohol in the bottom of the bottle. If it melts it mixes again and should be back to normal, though in my experience it always tastes rank.

At higher alcohol concentrations (eg vodka) it just doesn't freeze.

[boring fact]This can be used as a way to distill without illegal still apparatus but in theory it's a bit dangerous if your original mixture is from the wrong source as you can end up with dangerous levels of methanol. Not an issue with wine though![/bf]

Ah yes, should have qualified that it doesn't freeze at usual home freezer temperatures in the UK ?

    ?

Thanks hazel. So, does that mean I should really open the lovely bottle of Savignon Blanc that is in the fridge as my 'bag of soave' is ruined? ?

If it's a lovely bottle of Sauvignon, then definitely ?

If you're desperate and there's nothing left in the house then give the bag a shot ?

? So, tank the Sauvignon, then the bag when I have finished that! ?

Oh, after the day I have had with Wee(non)Smiley, I think I will drink the lot! ?

Alternatively you might wish to consider who's watering down your vodka....

BB, if your vodka hasnt been watered down, then your freezer is set waaaaaay too low and its costing you money in power. vodkas freezing point is lower than -26c, and domestic freezers should be around -18.

When Mr G has stuck vodka in the freezer it's come out as slush. Still don't know how he can drink it straight like that!
