Doubts on Dress...

LiverpoolB2B, 7 May, 2015 at 12:11 Posted on Planning 0 35

Hi All,

I am probably being silly here but I ordered a beautiful Pronovias dress on 18th April from a shop back near my mums, but these past days I've been doubting my choice. I know this is probably really normal, and most brides do. I absolutely love my dress, it suited me, its my style. I didn't cry or anything when I was in it, but I'm not the type of person too do that. Its a very simple satin gown, high necked, with a full skirt. I always knew I would pick satin, but Im starting to think is it a bit too modest, a bit too 'covered up' etc. Should I have gone for something strapless or with thin straps?

However since ordering it, I've just thought is it really the one for me? Did anyone else feel like this? Im really wondering whether I need to consider re picking my dress or not. Does anyone know if that's easy enough to do? Or do I face losing my £800 deposit if I decide to try another dress!! I feel so confused. I mean I won't see the dress now for 6-8months. That's a long time to really wind myself up about it.

I really feel like a lost lamb!! Smiley sad

It's normal to have dress wobbles. Post a pic of the dress if you want some affirmation ;-)

Personally I really like dresses that have an unusual neckline. i'm not the biggest fan of really small straps unless they have some beading or whatnot on it. You must have chosen a high neck for a reason when you tried it on. Maybe it was the most comfortable or the most 'you'?

Some people really suit strapless dresses. Maybe you felt it didn't quite work for you. I felt like that and ended up with cap sleeves.

You'll look lovely. Could you go back and try the sample on again? That may reassure you.

We come across lots of bride who worry about their wedding dress choice. Would you be able to go back to the shop to try the dress on again? Some brides pick their dress after trying on just 1 and others need to try on much more so there's no rule. It's all about how you feel. Many of our brides come back to the studio, try on the dress again and are assured of why they chose it in the first place and if there is anything they are not so sure about any more, we are able to tweak the design for them because we design them ourselves. I am aware that this may not be possible with a bridal shop though. Good luck with it all and hope you feel better soon x

What is making you doubt it? Is it coz it's a bit different and you feel you should have something that is more the "norm"? It's good to be different if that's the case!

You would need to speak to the shop about choosing another dress. Suppose it depends on whether they have put the order through and also if it is in the procss of being made yet or not.

I'm having the exact same doubts - I didn't do the whole crying thing either. I'm going back to the shop on Tuesday to get the seamstress quote and have another look at it, because I'm doing the classic looking through my photos and doubting myself. I THINK I love it, but I need to go back and see it again - I bought it back in October so I've had a long time to second-guess myself! I'd say go back and look again to remind yourself why you loved it x

Totally normal! I ordered my dress back in January and then wobbled about it until it arrived in the shop last week.

When I tried it on I remembered all the reasons why I chose, they were all still valid reasons and it was such a relief.

I still get dress envy when I see a gorgeous dress but it's more because I want loads of dresses not just the one Smiley winking

Another thing was that I only had pics of the model in it or dodgy ones of me, that didn't help! Seeing it on real brides I think is always good if you can, always an improvement on the model I my opinion!

I'm sure when it comes I you will remember why you love it.

    Thanks Halloweeny Smiley smile

Good idea, I've taken my face off just in case anyone I know lingers on these boards. I'm trying to keep it secret until the big day, only my mum and 3 bridesmaids have seen it.

Here it is, now the neck line I know looks awful but it was a sample size 14 and I actually measure a size 6 in their measurements (I've ordered an 8 given Im a bit bigger on the hips/bum then I am waist/chest). Maybe that's my issue? The picture doesn't really flatter the top part of me even though she clipped me in as tight as she could.

Oh Ladies, thanks so much. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thinks like this.

I tried on maybe 15/20 dresses at 3 different shops.

The first shop I fell in love with an incredible Suzanne Neville gown called Novello if you want to look at it to compare what I ended up choosing, but it was £2850 without a veil/hoop/shoes or alterations. I just couldn't justify it even though OH said if that's the one I wanted I could get it, I think I'd be so upset with myself If I looked back and realised Id spent the best part of £3.5k on a dress.

I then went to this store where I ended up buying the dress, and tried on about 3 dresses before I put this one on. As soon as I got it on, I loved it, I never ever where strapless, Im not comfortable in them. I also always tend to cover my chest up, I'm very pale naturally so I just don't like having lots of skin on show. I liked this dress because at the back its quite structured in the way the shoulders are cut out of it.

I've ordered the belt that's on the dress in the picture, but I think I might change that because its very plain, and there isn't a lot of 'detail' maybe if I tried a really sparkly belt with the dress it might make me feel a bit more special? Its all about the details isn't it.

First comment: That dress looks stunning, even allowing for size difference etc. Very elegant & classy, without being fussy. I think it looks great on you.

2nd comment: I rather suspect your doubts come from the fact that your heart fell in love with the expensive dress, which this isn't. While rationally you can decide that it was too expensive etc (and I'm not disagreeing with you there btw) your heart knows what it really wants. THAT is where the doubt bit is coming from IMO.

All you can do is keep reminding yourself WHY you spent the amount you did on this one, rather than the amount you could have on the other. Maybe write the reasons down? (E.g. a list of things you could buy with that money instead) Stick the list somewhere you can look at it regularly - in a way you're retraining yourself to fully believe that you've made the right choice.

But that dress really is awesome on you.

That is probably right Lady Zith!

I think my OH made it worse by giving me the green light to get it, but in my head it is just such a ridiculous amount of money. I mean we aren't scrimping the wedding together, we have a good budget but equally we aren't millionaires. The dress/shoes/veil and alterations are £1500 - 1700 cheaper then what the first dress cost. That's my band paid for pretty much.

I don't think I'd ever live with myself If I then stuffed a £3k dress in its box to sit in my loft for 20 years, incase I had a daughter who might want it! (Lets be realistic by then, its going to be so out of fashion they'll all be wearing neon green to weddings or something!)

I think maybe the belt is my biggest issue, and even though originally I was a absolutely NO BLING kind of girl, I think its needs something just to make it sparkle a bit. Its very white, and very plain at the minute?

Thank you all so much for your incredibly kind comments, I definitely feel a lot better about it. I just wish I had a better picture so I wasn't doubting the fit of it. I know when it arrives it still wont be perfect and it'll need a bit of a nip and tuck around my waist and chest where I am a bit smaller, but I keep looking at the picture and seeing the neckline not fitting as well.

Weddings eh?! I'm driving myself insane. I've just finalised my save the dates as well, no doubt when they arrive I'll doubt them as well! Think I need to re-enforce some positivity in to my decisions!!

You look amazing in your dress. You're right, it'll look better when it fits you properly, you'll be a real jaw dropper! It's not a dress style you see very often, which I think is great because it means you're pretty unique Smiley smile I certainly couldn't pull off that shape! I reckon once you've had your hair done the way you're going to wear it on the day, got some statement jewellery (I'm thinking earrings and bracelet) and tried your dress in the right size, you won't question whether it's the dress for you.

That dress is gorgeous especially the bottom half. I think you have made a good choice there. I am personally not a fan of the 'norm' and would go out of my way to find something a little different avoiding strapless dresses like the plague! (no offence to anyone who s having a strapless dress!️?️) I think your idea of a belt with a bit more sparkle will add a nice touch and if you were thinking of having a veil you could have one with bits of sparkle which again may add the extras you feel the dress is missing.

I completely understand the wobbles and doubts you have had but I think that is one of the nicest original dresses i have seen in a long time and will definitely make an impact (for the right reasons) on your wedding day.

Good luck with the final decision

Thanks ladies. It was the hardest decision I've made to date I think.

Standing there with all these dresses around you, thinking is this the one?! Every dress I tried on was beautiful, I mean every wedding dress is. I just didn't get the 'feels' but if I'm honest, I didn't get that with the incredibly overpriced dress either. My mum cried, but she's an emotional soul. I just think I'm too black and white in life to get emotional about a dress (I'm an auditor for a living!) maybe I'll feel a bit different when I get it back on and it fits properly?

Did any of you ladies get your hair done when you went and tried it on properly for the 2nd time or fitting? I'm wondering whether that might make me think, yes this is it? If I can see the 'bigger' picture.

I haven't picked a veil yet either, so one with a bit of sparkle could be a good idea. I tried one on that was 'corded' edge she called it, and was Cathedral length.

Has anyone got any pictures of their dresses when they tried them on, and then at their wedding day? It would be nice to see how different you looked in the end when you were all done up to perfection Smiley smile

That dress is beautiful - simple, elegant, classy, its really really lovely, and even on the sample size thats too big it look fab so just imagine it when its your size and been adjusted to fit. I actually prefer it to the other one you liked, theres just 'something' about the shape and style of this one...just looks timeless and classic but still modern and fresh! Im a fan haha! I actually really like it without a belt too, though its a great way to add a bit off extra sparkle if you think you need it...I just picture red lips, dangly sparkly earrings and maybe a drop pendant necklace with that! Hope your wobbles pass soon!

I'm having the same trouble I think, last time I tried my dress on I had wind swept hair, no makeup on and the dress was too big, it's hard to really imagine what it will look like on the day! I think I'd feel the same way about any dress though, it just needs to all come together.

I think your dress is a real show stopper, I actually said wow out loud when I saw it!

That's my other worry - necklaces!

I think its too high a neck to wear a necklace, but I inherited a beautiful emerald necklace when my grandmother passed away last year that I wanted to wear. Its too big to fit under the dress, but I think it might look daft against the dress! Guess I'll just have to take it with me when I try it on again and see what it looks like.

Definitely think it needs some statement earrings doesn't it but I think I'll end up wearing my trusty emerald studs that are on permanent loan to me from my mother Smiley winking

Argh. Who knew this would be the most stressful part so far.

My immediate thought was a cathedral veil but obviously don't now what the back of your dress looks like to see if there is a train. There are some beautiful cathedral veils i typed into google 'cathedral veil with crystal edge' and some lovely ones came up.

I can't see why there would be any harm in having you hair done ( or partly done by yourself) so you have an idea of what style you want but also what style would suit the dress.

Thank you. Yeah if I hadn't edited out my face you'd see my hair scrapped back into a ponytail, and I had minimal make up (enough to warrant leaving the house) Haha! I think really I should have made more of an effort and then when I look back at the picture I could really see myself a bit better about how I might look on the day but it just doesn't happen like that does it!

When I went for my dress fitting it tied in nicely with when my hair and make up trials were due so I had it all done on the same day and it was great seeing how it all came together so I'd definitely recommend that if you get chance! And yes take your jewellery with you, if nothing else it'll give you an idea of what you don't want, n the bridal shop should have a whole host of veils for you to try toger an idea of lengths and styles there...same for headpieces, you could always add a bit of sparkle with a crystal headpiece Smiley smile

I haven't tired any other lengths of veils on but the cathedral one did look nice against the dress.

This is the back of the dress (taken from website as I don't have the picture!)

Back of the dress is beautiful and does look lovely with a cathedral veil.

Its a lovely idea to wear your grandmothers necklace. I agree might not look right with the dress but how about wrapping it round twice and wearing it as a bracelet? It you do go for a sparkly belt and sparkly veil or other hair pieces you probably don't want over kill with the necklace. However, i have not seen the necklace so shouldn't really comment. Don't mean to offend.

Your dress is absolutely stunning - you have nothing to worry about. I am biased though because I have also gone for a satin dress which is very simple and, IMO, elegant. I've gone for the cathedral veil too. It would look amazing with your dress.

I wouldn't break it up with a belt, just let it speak for itself. Agree that statement earrings are the way to go here!

I had wobbles as all I had was a picture of me in the dress that was taken secretly as the shop didn't allow photos, so the pic wasn't good quality. When the dress arrived in store and I went to try it on again I remembered why I bought it and fell in love with it all over again. The assistant took some more pics for me and I hated them! But on my wedding day I felt amazing and I love how it looks in the pictures. When your hair and make up is all done nicely it makes all the difference!

Thanks ladies, I really appreciate all your kind comments. I definitely feel a bit better about it, I think I need to go back to my venue as well and remind myself why I picked the dress to go with the amazing venue.

We get married at Eaves Hall, Clitheroe if you look it up hopefully you will see what I mean about the dress matching the venue.

Im so glad Im not the only one to have dress wobbles, I did the same with the venue when we paid the deposit. Doubted my decision, but I knew it was the right one as it was the only one I showed our parents so that must stand for something.
