Dress alteration

Robyn, 8 April, 2022 at 18:10 Posted on Wedding Attire 0 5
Probably a really stupid question but wondering if someone’s able to explain it a bit better😅!

I’m planning on going dress shopping soon for my wedding in January 2023. I’m currently a size 12 in clothes, so when I try the dresses on it will probably be size 12/14. I’m wanting to hopefully take away my dress on the day, however I’m wanting to lose weight by January 2023, hoping to go down to a size 10. Is this amount of material able to be altered if take the dress in from a 12/14 to a 10, or will that not be possible! Also when’s best to get it altered if losing the weight for the wedding?x

I think it really depends on the dress- if it's very intricate or has an in-built corset alterations may be more difficult. Although generally it's not an issue to alter a dress down.

I would ask on the day if they have a seamstress, whether it can be adjusted , or whether that will be difficult. Otherwise I would probably take a picture of the dress and show it to a seamstress before purchasing just to be sure.

Thank you for your reply! I was going to hopefully get one from Wed2Be as I’ve seen ones on the website I like! They don’t have a seamstress so would need to get one myself unfortunately

I would also point out that another bride on here has recently posted that her alterations for a Wed2be dress that is the wrong size (too big) are costing £600 which is the same as the dress cost. I would just be careful about how much work the dress will need as buying off the peg might not be as cost effective as you think.

Not showing the pic on here Sarah. I just thought I would mention your experience to help! You will obv have first hand knowledge about the alterations now so can help Robyn out I’m sure. I think the average spent on a wedding dress is about 1-1.5k so I guess you are still saving anyway! Mine was £895 but it’s tea length so less fabric in the first place I suppose! Good luck with your alterations ladies
