Dress code or no dress code?

Lauren, 27 May, 2025 at 21:11 Posted on Wedding Attire 0 22

What's peoples general thoughts on dress codes? Some people have told me it's useful to have a guide and others have even asked if I have a theme for them to follow. Is this something a lot of people are doing now or not?

I think it depends on your crowd.

Personally, I loathe dress codes - weddings are expensive enough to attend as it is (travel, accommodation, gift etc) without having to fork out extra money on a 'themed' outfit that you may never wear again. But I know some of the people I've worked for have been to a lot of themed weddings, so I guess it's more common in circles that are quite well off.

Yeah I totally get that, it’s not fair to ask people to always buy something new. I was thinking more along the lines of, all your guests wear black or all your guest wear bright colours because your bridal party is in black, more of a stand out thing, you know what I mean? But yeah I totally agree with you there.

It can still mean that your guests have to buy something new if they don't happen to have a wedding-appropriate outfit in the colour you specify already. It really is a case of knowing your guest list - are they the kind of people who have very minimal wardrobes? If so, it might be an issue. If most of your friends like fast fashion and buy a new outfit for every occasion, not such a problem.

    Hello,

Professionalism and Image: In workplaces, dress codes are often seen as promoting a professional image for the company, building trust with clients, and creating a more serious atmosphere. Studies even suggest that dressing professionally can improve cognitive performance and negotiation outcomes. Cat to Human Translator

Totally get it; setting a dress code can really help guests feel confident. At Brooks Landscapes , we know how clear design themes elevate events, so why not apply the same idea to attire? It sets the tone beautifully!

I usually recommend using very general "categories":

    ~Formal (Black Tie)

    ~Semi-formal (Cocktail attire)

~Garden Party (Exactly as it sounds)

    ~Casual

    ~VERY Casual (cut-off shorts and t-shirts are a-ok)

As someone who works in the wedding industry, a former bride, and a guest at many weddings, I APPRECIATE this general guidance. No one wants to show up over or under dressed. Also, using such broad categories rarely requires anyone to buy anything new (Formal being the exception.....but that attire can often be borrowed or rented).

    Congratulations in advance!

    1. A lot of people appreciate even a simple heads-up, like “dressy casual” or “outdoor appropriate,” so they don’t show up feeling under- or overdressed.

It really depends on the vibe you’re going for! Some people like having a dress code or theme because it helps guests feel more comfortable and gives the event a cohesive look. But others prefer to keep it more casual and let everyone express themselves. If you're unsure, maybe just suggest something like "cocktail attire" or a color scheme to give people a bit of direction without being too strict! metal gaming

Dress codes are a mixed bag, with strong opinions on both sides. Some people find them helpful for clarity and creating a specific atmosphere, while others find them restrictive or even discriminatory. While themed events with dress codes are not universally common, they are definitely a trend for certain types of gatherings, especially those with a social or celebratory focus.

Totally up to you, but a light dress code is helpful! Guests usually like some guidance—it’s becoming pretty common these days.

I love the idea of skipping a strict dress code—it lets guests feel more comfortable. But sometimes it can backfire if people aren’t sure what’s appropriate. A little guidance can go a long way without being too formal.

I don't go to a lot of weddings so I like being told what the expectation is; it's also handy (obviously we know that -no white- is a given) but to actually tell your guests that let's them know that you're getting married in that colour and it's off limits.
