Dress help.....I can't find one!

Dizzybelle, 19 July, 2012 at 13:31 Posted on Planning 0 19

Getting very dissillusioned in the search for a dress. I can't seem to find anything I like.

We're getting married in a registry office followed by a big reception. I would like to wear a wedding dress of some sort (I know my fiance would like me to as well) but nothing OTT. I thought I would be able to find something easily from the high street but after having tried on most of the dresses in Monsoon, Coast, Phase Eight etc. I still can't find anything I like.

I've still got 10 months so loads of time but I'm wondering whether I'll be able to find anything or will end up getting married in my jeans. I know I'm quite fussy and I know roughly in my head what I want but can't seem to find it. I visited a bridal shop but that was no use as they seemed to have a lot of big dresses and nothing simple.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to anywhere online or high street that i could look. I don't really want to spend more than about £750.00.

Thanks

You can easily get a dress for under that in 'proper' dress shop. Why don't you give a few of them a call in your local area and find out what price ranges they stock? You could also get a sample dress, which would save you a bit of money.

What style of dress are you after? I think it's best to be really open minded when finding a dress, and you should try on as many different styles as you can. Sometimes what you think will suit you doesn't and vice versa

    Thanks to both of you.

I would really like something that is grecian style, without a train, I like chiffon and organza. Its a second wedding so I would prefer something more understated whilst still looking like the bride. I would also like something I could wear a proper bra with as I have F cup boobs and just feel more secure in a proper bra rather than strapless.

Thanks. I'm a 14/16 so have found in most bridal wear a 16 as it seems to come up on the small size.

Actually, courtesan boutique are making my ties and sashes for the flowergirl. Am decided about everything else apart from my own dress lol. I'll have another look at their site.

    Hi Dizzy,

If your still struggling, what do you think to the attached pic. It is well under your budget, is chiffon, straps and is quite simple with a fairly straight skirt that just kicks out at the bottom and has some quite delicate beading. If you want to drop me an email i could give you more details and send you some additional pics as it is very difficult to pick up how elegant this dress is.

    Hi,

Have you looked at Anoushka G at House of Fraser? They are mostly chiffon column dresses.

Apparently chiffon wedding dresses can be harder to find second hand as they are more likely to be damaged due to how delicate the fabric is. However, do look at the second hand sites.

Chiffon gowns are often called destination dresses in the designers collections as they are light so you could check that the boutiques have this sort of range in for you to look at.

Any bridesmaid dress range will make them in white and you can accessorise it like a wedding dress. This one would be perfect.

I think you should try some more shops. There are lots of designers that do simple, 'not big' but amazing dresses! Mine is very simple, alfred angelo 1148, and was £550.

    Dont give up!

I couldn't find what I wanted and rang a bridal shop to see if they did tea length - they said it didn't matter if they took off 2cm or 2m and a dress could be altered to suit me. I then bought a simple chiffon sample dress from them half price in the sale and had it drastically altered for £40 (bargain!) No pics yet - it has a bit of bling around the waist so it looks bridal

The other option is a cream/white/ivory bridesmaid dress as that will be less "fussy" from the outset

2 of my friends wore Dessy/ Alfred Angelo bridesmaid dresses in ivory and it looked gorgeous. Plus no train!

I was going to suggest a bridesmaid dress - cheaper than a 'normal' wedding dress plus a much wider variety of colours and styles.

This website has some nice dresses which you could customise or bling up with accessories - I'm thinking of getting Arabella and having some chiffon sleeves added by a dressmaker.

I saw some very lovely but not too fussy dresses on the BHS bridal website... they're very classic, absolute bargains and have good reviews. Plus free delivery and returns means you could order them all and try them all on!!! Smiley smile good luck!

Agree you could probably get something in a bridal boutique for your budget, if they stock some more simple designs.

The Two Birds dress was stocked in a boutique I went to with my sister for her wedding dress and looks lovely. I believe they can be worn a number of ways too.

Bridesmaids dress in white/ivory or colour of your choice sounds like a good idea too! It would come in under budget. You could always get some detail added to it by a local dressmaker if you wanted. Dessy do some lovely ones (I'm wearing a floaty strapless dress of theirs as Maid of Honour next year!)

Keep looking - in the next months or so a lot of the sample dress will be sold off for end of season, you may be able to get one at a good price, have you tried looking at the 'beach' ranges some of the are stunning! Bridesmaids dress are a good idea to remember they come in all the shades of whites and Ivorys etc

Or why not find a independant seamstress and see about getting one made?
