Dress not flattering...

Br, 7 September, 2023 at 19:00 Posted on Wedding Attire 1 3
Hi everyone,

Wedding coming up very fast (in ten days) and I'm struggling with my wedding dress.
I went to the last fitting today and realized I don't like the dress and I may have done the wrong choice in terms of shape. I have a pear shaped body and chose this a-line dress that had long and wide lace sleeves, back covered in really beautiful lace. The dress was quite wide when I bought it, especially sleeves were really puffy and large. The tailor took away all the bagginess and made the sleeves tinier. Now that the dress is very fitted on the top and I'm using an adhesive bra as it's all transparent on the back, I can see it's not really flattering with my body shape, there is no waist, and the skirt accentuates my large hips. It does not give that hourglass feeling that I was thinking of at the beginning.I feel so stupid for not having noticed this earlier. I told the tailor and he's trying to take away a bit of the puffiness of the skirt on my sides, but I'm worried it won't be enough.I am panicking and thinking of buying another last minute dress and not fit it. Anyone went through a similar issue and has any advice to share? Thanks!!

A-line is usually regarded as a universally flattering silhouette - it's the one that's often recommended if you are not sure what to go for, so I'm surprised it doesn't suit you. Are you sure it looks as bad as you say? Do you think you might just be suffering from last minute wedding nerves? Is there anyone you can show the dress to who you trust to give an honest opinion?

Also, can I ask how you normally dress? Do you like to dress up formally or are you usually in jeans? It does make a difference. If you are not used to seeing yourself in formal wear, then it can be quite unnerving to see yourself in a wedding dress, especially when the reality sinks in that you are really going to be wearing this in front of other people, not just in front of a mirror! So it might just be lack of confidence due to wearing a level of formality that you're not used to.

You could try to find a high street or mail order dress that fits you and just needs shortening, but you would be pushed for time at this point. Perhaps order one as a backup just in case? You might find that when you try it on, you realise that you actually prefer your chosen dress. Don't forget, you chose it for a reason - you must have liked it when you first tried it on!

Whatever you decide to do, try not to panic. I know it's easier said than done, but at the end of the day, the dress isn't nearly as important as the person you are going to be getting married to while wearing it. Think about your partner, think about your loved ones that you will be celebrating with. That's what matters long-term. I have a friend who got horrendous sunburn immediately before her wedding, so all her photos show her in a strapless dress with a red and white striped chest. She was mortified at the time, but now it's become a funny story that she & her husband laugh about.

Try not to stress too much. You may be overthinking it as your date is so close and that’s completely natural. But the likelihood of being able to make any chances now is probably quite low? Plus it would be a massive risk to may anymore last minute alterations.

Once you have your hair and makeup done etc I’m sure you’ll fall in love with it over again!

I hope you have the best day xxx

Oh no! Sorry you are having second thoughts about your dress. If you are still panicing you could try wed2b as they sell off the peg. They were brill when I visited! I can really recommend. At least trying other styles may help make the decision for you? I don't think you need an appointment. Good luck! I'm sure you will look beautiful no matter which dress you end up with!
