Dress sizing

xxbeckyxx999, 25 January, 2015 at 00:12 Posted on Planning 0 15

I've just read some posts and people keep mentioning that wedding dresses aren't the same sizing as the high street (one person normally being size 20 was size 28 in her dress) I'm getting slightly worried as I'm a size 20, I'm planning on going to David's Bridal but I'm worrying the long journey won't be worth it, I really don't want to be getting upset if none fit, I'd be heartbroken.

Any experience would be really helpful.

It's different for every dress designer, just as it is on the high street.

Designer dresses with corsets are about two sizes bigger, whereas my Stella York dress is my normal dress size.

Give them a call and ask what the range is like in your size, you definitely won't be the first Smiley smile

There is usually a size difference from HS to Bridal. This is mainly because there is no universal sizing system. So, what is a size 10 in one shop on the high street is not a size 10 in another shop on the high street - and the same in bridal.

That being said, David's Bridal would be a store that would cater for every size. Their selection is huge. My friend got her gown from DB and she was at least a size 24. She looked gorgeous. Also, bear in mind that in trying on a dress, you're trying on a concept and not the final product. The dress will be ordered in another size then altered to fit you. I really wouldn't pay attention to the size language used.

Exactly what ^^^^^^ said. It's also influenced by which country the dress designer is from. U.S. sizes are different to ours with a U.S. 10 being roughly equivalent to a UK 14. If it's a UK sized dress they are generally small sized so if you're a 14 you often need a 16 or even higher depending where your assets lie lol. But a good boutique will measure you and order the right dress size from the designer you choose. These measurements will allow for your biggest asset with the rest being altered to then fit.

As has also been said David's Bridal does have a good reputation for larger ladies and they will be able to help you out. There are other bridal boutiques that cater for larger ladies too. Also many routine boutiques can cater for larger ladies. Most of the designers do go up into the 20+ sizes and a good boutique will look after you whatever your shape or size.

Good luck and enjoy your visit. Do let us know how you get on. X

I think it's different in all shops like it's been said already it won't be the same with all dress.

im around a 20-22 and I managed to get a dress fine, I went into a normal boutique it wasn't even questioned if I would find a dress. I found my dress in that store. I did have to get a bigger size then what I get on the high street. I got a 26, I did have a bit of trouble with measurements my top measured a size 20 and my middle measured a size 26 ( well 1/4 an inch bigger then a 26 but she did have her finger between the tape measure so hopefully I will fit lol) I think you will be fine. I felt amazing in my dress didn't even think or worry about the size.

As above really, it varies from designer to designer. Also by the style of dress I think.

My dress is pretty true to size to be honest- but is only fitted at one part of the dress. The rest of it, you could be a couple of sizes bigger/smaller and it wouldn't matter.

It's always good to go and have a try I think, as you can never really be sure until you've tried something on.

My beautiful lace up boned mori lee dress was true to size (14) but when I was MOH, I had ridiculous measurements! According to that designer, I was an 18 top, 20-22 waist and size 6 hip! Clearly not the case. In the end I ordered a 16 and it was just about OK, could probably have worn an 18. You'll be fine, try not to worry about size, they'll look after you

Depending where you live and how far you are willing to travel,

I hugely recommend Embrace Bridal in Deeping (peterborough) they are amazing and are a plus size specialist shop so have about 70+ dresses to try on. They stock Sophia Tolli, Pronovias, Sonsie Veromia and others.

Sally and her staff are amazing!

It depends on the designer. My dress is a sample and is by enzoani. I bought the size up from my normal dress size thinking this would fit me but actually it is huge. So its not always the case that they are small fitting.

Honestly it depends on the size of the dress.

When i tried some on the other week, the dresses that fitted ranged from a 12 to 22.

    I'm normally a size 16 to 18.

Don't worry about the dress sizes - I reckon some of the designers make it up as they go along! My dress was ordered in a size 16 - I am really not a size 16! Although, the lady in the shop told me that was just for my boobs! The rest of my is a 12 and occasioanlly a 14.

Just go along and try to enjoy the experience; I know I had a lot of fun doing it!

Thank you honey... the cheques in the post ;-).... and we now have over 100 dresses!! (note to self - must stop buying new ones!)

Regarding sizing..... in my professional experience there is no consistency whatsoever in wedding dress sizes so I really wouldn't worry too much about it. I used to have a brand in the shop that was 5 inches smaller on a size 18 bust measurement that any other label in the shop!

Our "normal" every day clothes are full of lycra and therefore stretch to accommodate our various body measurements. For example I wear leggings that are either a 16 or an 18 but my rather amle rump is a size 22. In a Sophia Tolli I wear a 22 (pic attached), in a Sonsie im a 22-26, in Justin Alexander I was a 28 and the same in Pronovias. Mori Lee Im anywhere between a 20 and 26 dependant on the shape of the dress.

What I WOULD advise however is to ring ANY shop that you are planning on visiting and ask them (without telling them what dress size you are!) how many gowns they have FOR YOU TO TRY ON COMFORTABLY in sizes over an 18. I have had brides that have just rang ashop and said "do you have a plus size range?" to get there and find that they either have 2 size 16s shoved on the end of a rail or the dresses are "available" up to a size 32. A crafty sales assistant will tell you anything you want to hear because once they have you in the shop half of their job is done!

Good luck with your search, there are some fantastic gowns out there for the fuller figured lady, who often dont realise just what a fabulous shape they have. Dont restrict yourself to any one particular designer or shape, try anything you fancy, your only going to do it once so have fun with it!
