Driving and un-MOTd car to it's MOT

fiorelli, 3 April, 2008 at 08:14 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

Am I right in thinking that it is ok to drive an un-MOTd car to a pre-booked MOT?

We have lost our last MOT, so don't know the exact date it ran out. A call to the place we bought the car last year was only as specific as 'we invoiced an MOT on 3rd April, but we could have done it before then' (we bought the car on 6th April).

I have this fear that I will be stopped by the police on my way there, I also haven't driven the car for a week while we wait for the MOT to be done today.

Please tell me this is ok, and that the insurance will be still valid as I'm driving to a pre-booked MOT...

Thanks.

I thought that driving to an MOT was allowed. I'm not an expert in this area though.

Could you check with your insurance company?

I could, but the insurance is in my husbands name, and as such they wouldn't speak to me. My husband is a driver, so on the road and unable to call.

I also thought that this was the only time it was ok to drive without an MOT, when you where on your way to the test centre.

    This is from the BBC:

However, if you intend to drive your car away from the test station with a Refusal of an MOT Test Certificate, there are some stipulations. It is illegal to drive a car of MOT-testable age that does not have a current MOT test certificate on public roads, with the exception of driving it away to a place of repair, which may include your home residence. From there you may be permitted to drive to a pre-booked place of repair, and to a pre-booked MOT test station.

Yes it is fine. As long as the police can call and verify the appointment they will let you carry on the journey to the testing station.

Thanks all. I suppose there is really nothing I can do than drive it there. And if I DO get stopped (have to drive right by local police station where there are always police coming and going), explain and hope they understand.

Oh, and it is (well, should be!) fully check-able. Booked in with make/model/reg of my car, my name/phone number etc.

    Thanks again.

Thanks for the info - my MOT runs out on Friday, and the earliest appointment was Saturday. It's all booked in though, and I have the booking confirmation.

It's parked on the road outside my house though - if it's not being driven can I still be done as it's on a public road rather than on private land?

Well, I have just driven my un-MOTd car to be MOTd only to drive it home again, still un-MOTd.

    In other words, it FAILED?

In the 8 years my husband and I have been together, we have NEVER had a car fail it's MOT. But then, they have all been my husband's cars (in as much as it was his money that paid for them), but the one time I buy a car for us (in that it was my money that paid for it), it fails the MOT?

I have to pay out nearly £200 on a suspension arm for my '04 reg Zafira. Plus, I have to pay for a partial retest (although this may be waived) as the garage can't get the part until next week. They will, however be picking up and dropping off my car for free.

It also has 7 advisories on it?
