Dubai Immigartion?

Scaredy-cat, 8 April, 2008 at 12:20 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

Hi I'm hoping someone might be able to advise as I'm in a bit of a panic. My H and I are looking to move to Dubai later this year - he has been offered a job - subject to visa approval. Now here is the issue he has a criminal record and I'm just wondering whether this will prohibit his entry and his visa will be declined.

I know this is probably a piece of string question, especially as I'm not being specific about the conviction, but I'm just wondering whether anyone knew Dubai's entry requirements.

I've tried googling and looking at the embassy website but can't seem to find anything.
Many thanks SC

I would have said that he will have implications and they may refuse entry.

But I think that it maybe done judged on how long ago it was and the crime.

I think it is best to try and make an apointment at the embassy. I know more about what can't be taken to Duabi. I.e Porn, anything of a religious nature.

I would check first of all whether it actually asks on the form whether he has a criminal record. If it doesn't - so he isn't forced into declaring it or lying - then I wouldn't worry. They don't have access to UK police records.

Thanks both for replying. I was just wondering whether anoyone had any experience of how the process worked and at what stage you have a Criminal Records check (if at all) - I'm not sure how it works at all.

    Thanks again

?SC, I'm pretty sure that a criminal check isn't done. For your residency visa you just need a valid UK passport, you have a blood test for HIV and you need to have the relevant certificates for the job you're being employed for.

I remember that for my bosses the only time that a check was done on them by the Dubai police was when they were applying for the company registration.

So as long as your h isn't starting up his own business with his name on the company documents he should be fine.

Thinking over this and I would imagine that if immigration here were to check if you had a criminal record they would need addresses that you had lived at in the UK and that is def never done.

Dubai are being quite harsh with who they're letting in at the moment, I would do as much research as possible, e.g actually speak to the british embassy etc.

Button, thanks for this - its really helpful and a bit reasurring - thanks for taking the time to answer. Obviously we won't try and hide anything if asked but we're just trying to gauge if we will be asked and what checks will be done. Did you go through immigration recently? The recruitment consultant my H is going through has mainly mentioned financial checks rather than criminal checks - does that sound about right. We should have the inital papers through soon - so we're know more then. Thanks again.

Tahdah - just wondering what your basing the strict bit on - have you had recent experience of Dubai immigartion. I've checked the embassy websites and there doesn't seem to be anything on there. Thanks for your help.

SC, I never get asked anything at immigration anymore as I have residency, but all visitors we've had come over have been asked is why they are coming to Dubai, business or holiday.

I've checked with our PRO guy (the person who processes all of our company visas) and no Dubai immigration don't check for a crimminal record in the UK.

Tahdah - I'm a bit puzzled about you saying that Dubai are being harsh about letting people in, where did you get this info? As long as I've been here if you have a UK passport, you get an automatic 60 days visit visa, no questions asked.

It's been all over the papers!

The Times had a huge article on it the other week.

I'm only saying what I read, and have seen on tv. [:I]

How strange, I'll have a look for that article. Sometimes what we're told here is different to the rest of the world and there is a huge amount of press censorship here.

Button - thanks so much for your reply and taking the time to ask the guy at work - he must have been a little puzzled as to why you were asking!!!!

Tahdah - I've had a quick search of the times and can't seem to find the article. Have found lots of stuff on clamping down on illegal migrant workers but not much else. Have you got a link to the article?

Thanks again both for your help. SC

I'm a regular at DXB immigration & don't recall any changes or clamp downs.
