How long after the last, erm, outburst, can you start to eat again? i haven't eaten since yesterday morning and feel so weak, but i'm scared that food will start things off again ?

if i was going to try and eat something, what's best? dry toast?

You poor thing, I hope that you feel better soon - dry toast should be fine, or other similar plain food such as rice or bananas.

OOoh, Norovirus always goes around at this time of year. ? Hope you feel better soon
If you feel like it, eat something /conditions/norovirus/?url=Pages/what-is-it.aspx

There is no specific treatment for a norovirus, apart from letting the condition run its course.

If you, or your child, have a norovirus, starving (not eating) will not speed up the recovery process any more than eating a light diet. You should start by eating foods that are easy to digest, such as soup, rice, pasta, and bread. Babies should be given their normal feed.

Drinking plenty of water will help to replace the fluids that are lost through diarrhoea and vomiting, and prevent dehydration. This is very important for young children and the elderly, who are particularly prone to dehydration and, in some cases, may need treatment in hospital if it occurs.

Anti-diarrhoea medicine is available from pharmacies over-the-counter (OTC) and may be used if you have a norovirus. However, these forms of medication are not suitable for children, and should not be used if you have a fever (a temperature that is over 38C or 100.4F). Check with your pharmacist if you are unsure.

Thanks SLD - it's soooo rank. thankfully the baby seems to have escaped it, but MrF and I spent the whole of yesterday wiped out.

When H had this the doctor advised him to avoid dairy, and to drink lemonade. he felt a million times better just on the lemonade - I guess the sugar gives a bit of energy whilst not being very sweet.

In fact he felt so much better he decided to have soup. Did he eat the light weight-watchers chicken noodle soup I bought him? No. He ate cream of mushroom, and wondered why he saw it again 5 minutes later...

The acidity of the lemonade also helps the body's pH balance - you lose a lot of stomach acid when vomiting.

You can get rehydration powders from the pharmacy (sugar, salts etc) but I prefer isotonic lucozade sport / gatorade.

What zebra said- flat coke/ ginger beer/ lemonade gets a bit of sugar into your system and if you can face ginger beer, the ginger can be very calming on your stomach. Once you're feeling up to it, see if you can try some chicken noodle soup (I've always preferred a 'wet' diet when I'm poorly, and the thought of dry toast is enough to make me barf even when I'm perfectly well. ?) You poor love- hope you're better for your birthday (is it not cub's b'day too?) ? ?

Thanks all. we have just managed a glass of flat ginger beer each. rock and roll ?

i hope i'm better tomorrow too, lou. i'm soooo glad it didn't hit on saturday when we had a house full for cub's first birthday party. bizarrely no one else is ill at all, which at least means it's not my dodgy cooking to blame ?

Oh you poor thing ? I had it a couple of weeks ago and it was beyond rank. Eating a light diet might not make it worse, but it sure doesn't make it better - as I learned to my cost after half a banana ?

BUT after about 24 hours, eating was fine. I always start with 50/50 water and orange juice with a bit of salt and a spoonful of sugar in. It's rehydrate, basically, but without the rank taste. It's a hideous bug, but it's quickly over.
