eating out of date fish

ebee, 25 March, 2009 at 17:27 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

I hate wasting food, and somehow managed to think the use-by date on the fish in the fridge was today, not two days ago ? Should I just eat it anyway or bin it? It's basa fillets in breadcrumbs if that makes the slightest bit of difference ?

How does it smell (and no "it can't, it's a fillet with no nose" gags please!)

I personally wouldn't risk it - although having just had a tummy bug, I may be biased!

With pretty much all fish (and meat) it will smell repulsive before it becomes dangerous to eat it. Shellfish slightly dodgier but you won't be able to get near normal fish by the time the nasty bacteria deign to grow on it.

    I'd bin it.

I'd bin it too, especially as it's fish. Even if you were to cook it (if it doesn't smell off), you probably wouldn't enjoy it anyway as you'd way too paranoid that it might have gone off (well, that how I'd be anyway)

We ate some very out of date potted shrimps the other day and lived to tell the tale! If it smells okay, it probably is - you might just need to give ti a bit more help in terms of how you cook it.

? thanks for all your replies .... I decided to cook it, but as I took it out of the packet it just looked a bit soggy and limp and didn't smell the freshest so I chickened out and binned it ?

So now we're having chicken instead !!
