Eeek. Scarlet Fever

KJX, 1 May, 2008 at 16:42 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

I thought the days of Scarlet Fever were long gone (daft I know) - but there are cases at my son's school - with three in his class.

Have googled the symptoms as I hadn't a clue what to look out for (used the DoH site result fwiw). It looks nasty - poor kids!

There seems to be a flood of cases where illnesses are becoming more prevalent - there are 30 cases of TB in a school in Birmingham at the moment.

I honestly thought it had all but died out in this country - TB, we had a couple of instances of young people with this (of some stage / variety) when I worked in Childrens Services - all of them were unacompanied asylum seekers - so as well as having to cope with their life changing beyond belief, they had scary medical things to cope with. I really felt for them.

It can be a mild form. Scarlet Fever per se isn't too bad but if it turns into Rheumatic Fever it can be.

The three in Boy1's class seem to have it very mildly - they are all a fetching shade of pink from what my mum was saying (she can do the playground gossip thing!). One of the younger kids in another year is quite poorly with it - although not seriously.

    I can't have a pink son - he'll clash with the sofa!

I had it as a kid (~ 7 year old) and don't really remember much of it, so it can't have been too traumatic as I'm a terrible patient! ? Poor kid though.

I had been ill with something else beforehand, so picked it up because my immune system had been completely battered for the last month or two by the other illness.
