Engagement ring broken AGAIN! FFS!!!!

bringon2010, 11 of October of 2010 at 09:50 Posted on Planning 0 2

Hi all,

Me and my engagement ring seem to be cursed..

Got engaged 6th August last year (married May just past)

My ring is lovely, everything I could ever have asked for (but never did!!!) 1 Carat Diamond in a raised 4 claw "American" style setting, in Platimum - the HARDEST metal known to man, right??

6 weeks after i had it (and throughout the process of moving house) I noticed one morning that the bottom right claw had been twisted so it was amost touching the top right claw! OH had bought the ring in Glasgow, we live in Edinburgh, so brought it to a ring specialist in town as it was closer... at the time i was told it would take 1 week to fix.. it took 3 (for a reason which was never really explained to me except it was a difficult setting to get just right (???)

So, I was mucking about last night with OH and heard a tiny "rattle" coming from my hand... had a wee look and FFS! The stone actually now revolves in its setting!!!

Has anyone else had bother with thier E-ring - what should I do? Is it covered by the original dealer once it's been touched by another "ring fixer" ?

Ring is now lying in my drawer and I feel totally naked without it....

Platinum is pretty hard, but it's not the hardest metal. And it still has to obey the laws of physics and can be bent or damaged. American or Cathedral settings are also prone to damage because of the profile, they stick out a long way from the finger and tend to get knocked or caught easily.

I'd say you were past the point where you could go back to the original retailer, mostly because of the time issue. But it wouldn't hurt to ring them and see where you stand.

I'd go to a reputable independant jeweller and ask them to make you a new ring and set the diamond in it - I'd also go for a lower profile 6-prong setting with a large stone. They should be able to use the original platinum, so you're remodelling rather than replacing.

    Judeclarke, x

Thanks so much for the reply... I'm now a bit worried that it's going to cost a whack of cash to remodel... but will call tomorow when they open and see what they say....

Urgh... just HATE not wearing it...

(wee small panic attacks when I look / feel my finger...) - Irrational but Tangible :-)
