Engagement ring size

Rose25, 22 October, 2014 at 12:40 Posted on Planning 0 12

Hi folks!

It's my first time on here so i hope i'm posting in the right section. Basically, i'm in a bit of a quandary over what to do with my engagement ring, and I'm hoping there might be some other people who've been in a similar situation and might be able to offer advice...

My boyfriend proposed last week (so i guess he's now my fiance, eeek - still getting used to that!). He got a ring from H Samuel. They only had an M in stock, which he suspected would be too big, but he decided to take that one so he had something to propose with, and then we went in at the weekend to get my finger measured and the correct size ordered. When the lady measured my finger she started with a K, which seemed kind of ok to me, if slightly more snug than I would have liked. She then moved down to a J, which definitely felt too small (although that was the one she thought I should go with). In the end we ordered the ring in a K, and went to collect it last night. So today is my first day of wearing it.

I'm now wondering if I should stick with the K, or if I could do with it being a little bit bigger. And the reason i'm wanting to make a decision in the near future is because i have 30 days in which I can swap or get the ring resized for free. Basically it's a pretty much perfect fit right now. it's easy to get on to my finger, but takes effort to get it off (about 3 secs to wiggle it over the knuckle). If my finger's wet, or after putting hand lotion on, it obviously becomes a bit looser, but not to the point of falling off. So like I say, perfect fit. HOWEVER, I'm concerned that if my fingers get any bigger in the summer (and to be honest i don't know if they will - never paid much attention), or when i have a wedding ring on the same finger, it might become too tight. I would feel happier with it being a bit looser, but don't want to risk it flying off my finger, or spinning round all the time. At the moment it does spin round, but only if i move it.

So, I could keep the ring as it is, and get it re-sized further down the line if necessary (at a cost). I could get it re-sized now up to a K and a half (but risk that not being big enough, and then having to get it re-sized AGAIN). Or i could take it back to the shop and swap it for an L, and hope that's not too loose. But if it is then i would still have the option of getting that taken down to a smaller size.

Sorry for the ridiculously long message! I seem to be going round in circles trying to reach a decision on this, so any tips or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm. My ER is a N and I ended up getting my WR in an O - it's a wider band and with both on the same finger the O just felt better. But I wouldn't get your ER bigger now or you run the risk of it falling off in the meantime! People lose/gain weight and fingers swell for other reasons, it's just a fact of life. Get your ER to fit now, and if it needs re-sizing just before or after the wedding, you can sort it then.

You should be able to get it off without much difficulty but not easily- like you say it sounds like a perfect fit. If I were you I would do some exercise that gets you hot and sweaty and then put your hand in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes- dry it off and then try putting your ring on and taking it off. If it is really uncomfortable then it may be trouble in the summer.

My ring is 2 sizes too big (it's an L and I need a J) and if I shake my hand, as if I'm shaking water off them, it comes off after 3 o4 4 shakes it has dropped off when I was really cold so I know I definitely need to get it resized!

My ring finger has adjusted to my ring so I had to get mine resized twice in the first couple of months! My fingers have swollen while on holiday etc but not ridiculously. When you take my ring off you can actually see a little dip when my ring is. My colleague also has the same issue. And if, in a few months, you still don't feel comfortable, it isn't expensive to get it resized!

Congratulations and welcome to Hitched Smiley smile

    It sounds fine to me.

I'm not sure i'd change it if it's the perfect fit now.

What you might want to do is go into H Samuel and try it on with a wedding ring to see if that makes it feel a bit too tight (they do sit on a different part of your finger once you've added the wedding band).

My engagement ring is an R and I have to get it resized after the wedding. It fits fine now, much like yours does, but with the wedding ring on too, it digs in a bit. The wedding ring is bigger because I chose the size! The engagement ring is an old family ring that was given to us as is and by chance, it fitted.

If it fits - keep it. You can get it resized at a later date if it starts to not fit any more - but it seems a bit absurd to get it resized to a size that doesn't fit!?

Anyway - congratulations, how wonderful, and how jealous I am of you having all the wedding planning ahead of you! I love where I am right now, newly married, but I'd oh so love to relive the last year over again. Enjoy wedding planning Smiley smile

Congratulations on your engagement! Your ring sounds like mine, easy to get on with a little wiggling to get off. Ideally I'd have liked it slightly more snug as when it's cold it really does swivel round a lot, but because my knuckle is wider than the bottom bit of my finger it made it much more difficult to remove. (They had to get the washing up liquid out to get the ring sizer off my finger in the jewellers) and when it's hot it's a slightly better fit. I'm going for a half size smaller, so an I instead of an I and a half, tho for my wedding ring cus I don't plan on taking that off much, where as I take the ER off every night. As others have said it sounds a bit daft to get it made bigger, as from what you've said if it's bigger it may well just slip right off. Don't know if it follows, but if you wear a watch does that get tighter on your wrist in summer. If it doesn't much, maybe the same'll go for your fingers? I know that kind of applies to me but don't know if it's an actual thing? And you can always get it resized in future if needed!

My ring was originally a K (OH guesswork? We reordered in an I and when I went to fetch it it was still too big so had it resized to a H. When we fetched it the second time I was worried id done the wrong thing as it felt really snug but now it fits perfect - loose! I'm not sure if it was because when it was new I was so conscious of it and constantly playing with it and probably making my finger swell a bit.

If I was you I'd leave it as it for now. By the time you but your wedding ring you'll have probably gone through a winter season and will then know the right size for your wedding ring and could always get ur ER resized at that point if necessary.

If it fits now though after the bath / in central hearing etc I'm sure it'll be fine.

    Congratulatons and happy planning x

Some good advice above and I think you've done the right thing with your sizing.

But FWIW, I went a half size bigger than my "normal" ring size, L and a half, and I now have the slight wiggle to take off but plenty of movement that you describe. My wedding ring is totally bespoke, including the sizing, so it's just under a size up at not-quite M and a half - I deliberately went a bit bigger because it sits lower on the finger and wearing two rings does funny things to the diameter of your finger.

In summary, do nothing now, but think about it again when you get your wedding ring

I agree - don't get a ring resized to something that doesn't fit now but might fit in the future....what you have now fits now and might ormight not fit in the future, who knows.

My ER is a K. I could get away with a j or a j1/2 but that would be too snug when my hands get warm and when we go walking as they tend to swell. It's OK as it is and isn't going anywhere soon, but it can swivel at times. My WR is also a K and fits nicely with the ER. I deffo wouldn't have wanted that any smaller. And there is no way I would get any ring a different size in case something changes. Wait until it does change then deal with it.

    Congratulations

Tricky one, mine is a bit loose in winter, fits well when warm. I wondered if mine should be a bit smaller as the spinning annoys me bit now I have my wedding ring too, that feels slightly tighter (same size, thicker band, and my ER has stopped spinning.

    Hi everyone!

Thanks so much for the replies. It's been really useful to hear how other people have got on with their ER rings as this is all so new to me. I do agree with what many people have said - that it seems silly to get a ring resized if it fits fine now. I suppose I was just trying to plan for all eventualities (which, sadly, is never possible!).

I've done some more wearing of my ring and have noticed it feeling a little too tight at certain times of the day, such as after power-walking on my lunch break, or when putting it on after having a bath. On these occasions, it's quite snug and is a struggle to get off my finger again. And I do anticipate wanting to take it off my finger quite regularly, for things like washing up, cleaning the house, sleeping etc.

I think what I'll do is pop back to the jewellers at the weekend and see if they've got a wedding ring I can try on alongside this one, just to get a feel for if/how it would alter things. I'll also ask if they've got any rings in an L that I can try, to get a feel for whether it would be a more comfortable fit (in terms of being able to remove with less difficulty when my hands are hot). When I had the temporary ring in an M I did try shaking my hands vigorously while wearing and it didn't come off, so there is an outside chance that an L could work...

I suspect this size would be perfect for most people in my boat. I'm just gradually realising that I must have some weird claustrophobia issues with wearing jewellery on my hands! Probably the reason I've never bothered wearing rings previously.

    Thanks again Smiley smile
