Erythromycin experiences, anyone?

30 December, 2008 at 18:06 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 17

I'm on this and it's really upset my stomach ☹️ just in time for NYE as well.

Just wondering if anyone else has had issues with it?

TIA

I used to have no problems with it on the occasions I had it when I was younger. The last time I had it was about 3 years ago and it made me feel incredibly sick. I was pregnant at the time and also had morning sickness. I could barely keep fluids down, so I had to come off it and they prescribed Cephalexin instead. That was much better.

I've heard it's pretty common too. I don't think I've been sick on it, but do remember a disgusting taste in my mouth. ?

I've *touch wood* been ok on it but I have heard stomach upsets are common. My pharmacist always tells me to make sure I have it with food, even the late night ones, so I have with a bowl of cereal to give it something to work on.

I had it and it made me extremely sick - I contacted the doctor and was told to stop taking it - it now flashes up on my medical notes not to give it to me.

I had a course of this a few weeks ago and it made me feel ten times worse than I did before I was taking it. The upset stomach, sickness, nausea, headaches, hot AND cold flushes....the lot.

I was prescribed it as i'd been given a couse of steroids (asthma related), so I don't think that helped as they make you feel bloomin awful aswell! Not sure if i'm imagining things, but if i remember correctly, don't you have asthma trouble too Jo? Just wondered if its the same sort of issue? Please correct me if i'm talking out my arse though!?

Hope you're feeling better soon! x

I have this whenever I need such a medicine. Touch wood I've always been good with it, although I've not had it for about a year. I had it in medicine form as a kid and as tablets as an adult. I always try to take medicine with food, seems to help reduce side effects.

Ah, Jo, that doesn't sound like much fun at all.

Definitely try to eat something. I'm sure it says you should take the tablets with or after food. Helps with the nasty gut trouble...apparently! I always find plain crackers handy to have around, as are ginger biscuits as they help with the sicky feeling. Lemon tea with honey helps too, and as an added bonus it'll help soothe your throat a bit too. x

Oh yuck, poor you! It gives me a really bad stomach, hence I never take it now but when I have ginger has been a god send.

Also Serevent is marvellous!! I started on this about 6 months ago (I was waking up around 4 times a night with asthma) and it controlled mine within 24 hours. It's a wonder drug!

I agree, Serevent is fabulous. Takes a couple of weeks to properly kick in but as soon as it's time to take it I know, because I can almost feel it running out and I start to get wheezy again.

Ooh yes. It's not fun if you react to it. I had horrible stomach pains and V&D after just one tablet recently (am allergic to penicillin), so had to stop the course and put up with being ill instead, which was less painful.

I hope you feel better soon.

I'm allergic to it. It makes me vomit. I'm also allergic to amoxyl, which brings me out in an itchy rash. When I was a kid, my Doctor used to tease me that I was posh as I was allergic to the two cheapest medicines!

I'm the same as Sugarmouse, have violent stomach pains and V&D after one tablet - never again
