Evening Buffet food ideas please !

Michelle772012, 25 October, 2011 at 16:41 Posted on Planning 0 8

Evening ladies and gents

Have been speaking to my caterer today and she has suggested i come up with some things people would expect at an eve buffet that i would be happy with she isnt a pro has done a few functions by herself and is really good she makes everything from scratch which is what i needed as my son has a major nut allergy, i want something more upmarket than the run of the mill stuff that you would expect at a birthday party for example and would love some suggestions, i need it to look and taste amazing as my sit down meal is fish and chips i dont want people to think i have been cheap i havent its the only way i could feed 120 guests a hot meal in a 2 hour window before the eve reception guests arrive.

Also do people really like egg sarnies at parties and would they be missed my grandmother is adamant i have them i told the caterer no but even she said they always go, i like eating them any other time but well they stink lol

all opinions welcome

TIA

Samosas seem to be quite popular at buffets these days as do spring rolls - you can make veggie options of both of these too incase you have any vegetarians coming. Plus they are yummy! You could have some mango chutney and sweet chilli sauce in little pots. Can't go wrong with sausage rolls either. Perhaps some mini pastries?

Little individual tartlets and pasties might be nice? Or how about big platters of meat including pates also one of smoked fish and bowls of differernt salads and have it as a fork buffet with a platter of cheese too with lovely biscuits and chutneys?

Savoury profiteroles with a creamy inside like crab, bacon or a cheese mixture

Mixed dips with warm lebanese bread- homous, tzatziki, taramasalata

Chicken wings or drumsticks in a soy/sesame sauce

Vietnamese summer rolls with veggies, duck or prawm

mini yorkshire pudding canapes with either beef & horseradish, or turkey & cranberry

    Mini salmon & lime cakes

Lamb kofte, chicken tandoori or chicken satays on skewers

Breaded king prawns with a dip

Grilled scallop & sauce served on a Chinese soup spoon

Veggie or duck spring rolls with dipping sauce

Any sort of tart- caramelised onion, tomato/basil, egg/bacon

Sorry, just re-read your initial request. Omit the chicken satays if your son has a nut allergy. I would never have expected egg sandwiches at an evening buffet. Is this common? I would think cold sandwiches of any sort to be more of an afternoon tea/party food, not an evening wedding food. Esp if you want more upmarket food as you said.

I am having fish and chips for our sit down meal too! ?

For our evening buffet we are having - pork pies, sausage rolls, sausages, scotch eggs, quiches, coronation chicken, salad, cheese, bread with chutneys (that sort of thing).

We arent having sarnies, people can make there own if they want them. The reason for this is that we are catering it ourselves and there is no way I will have enough time to prepare 100s of sarnies! ?

I do LOVE egg sarnies though, and if I go to a party and they are having sarnies, I always have the egg ones.

We are having something along those lines - we are having a cheese cake, with roasted ham, chicken and a large salmon with biscuits, crackers, chutneys etc etc.

thank u all so much for your ideas when i say party food my grandmother has this idea i should have egg sarnies, big bowls of prawn cocktails, well very 60s kitch type of food and i am hoping to show her this thread so that she understands i dont want all out 60s nothing wrong with that era but something slightly more modern for the modern bride is needed i think with all of your ideas if i took a mix of the usual and added some of the spring rolls. samosa, mini tartlets etc it would be a nice variety we are having mini bread rolls, filling to be decided but if too many of you say egg im going to have to have some lol might lose the battle but will win the war as for cheese and pineapple that is something from the 60's that i am absolutely having its one of my favourite, i'm thinking cheese boards with pork pies and mini chutneys and biscuits i love cheese!

sorry something happened whilst typing and everything went big now i cant change it oooopps !

We had a pate and cheese board in the evening and the venue put this amazing selection of cheeses and pates out, together with baskets of fresh bread and crackers/cheese biscuits. I didn't have any (far too full!) but it looked fab and everyone said they really liked it compared to normal 'brown buffet' food. HTH!
