Evening catering when having afternoon tea for Wedding Breakfast

slbarber, 28 November, 2012 at 21:25 Posted on Planning 0 9

Hello!

I am looking to have afternoon tea in place of the wedding breakfast.

Many people have said to me that for the evening buffet, they normally cater for 2/3 of the guests (as many will be well fed from daytime!) - however what would people recommend if I am having afternoon tea in the afternoon rather than a traditional 2 or 3-course meal? Should I cater for 100% of guests, or from people's experience, would you say that this isn't necessary?

I am aiming to have the afternoon tea around 4 or 5ish and then evening food out from around 7 or 8...

I did go to a wedding similar to this recently - and was stuffed after the afternoon tea! However wouldn't want guests to be hungry... So would be interested to know what people think :-)

Personally i'd cater for 100% after taking into account it's afternoon tea in place of a 3 course meal.

It's a lovely idea and I may well just be a greedy pig, but I cant imagine being full all day on sandwiches and scones so i'd definitely need something extra in the evening to keep me going.

I always think its better to have too much than not enough, but appreciate that others may disagree.

We had afternoon tea between 1:30pm and 3:30pm, then a full 3-course dinner (if you include the cake) served at 7pm (cake and tea/coffee came out at 9pm). All the afternoon tea was eaten and the dinner too!

Personally I'd always err on the side of overcatering but that's just me, I couldn't bear anyone to leave my house or party and feel they hadn't had enough.

For our wedding next May, instead of having a 3 course meal we are having a picnic basket for each table filled with posh breads, cheese boards, meat platters, pates, pork pies etc....

We decided that because this is not a full blown dinner that we would cater for 100% of guests when it came to the evening buffet. Our caterer has said that he thinks it might be over doing it but as we both love our food we knew that we'd hate for anyone to go hungry at our wedding ?

Afternoon tea is such a lovely idea, and you will get the bonus of amazing photos!

You could also do something a bit different for the evening for catering, I have looked at having a stall called Chipstix (based in the South, www.brightonchipstix.co.uk) to do a potato based treat, or fish n chip vans are cool.

hope you have a lovely day whatever you decide x

Helloooo I had afternoon tea followed by hot pork and beef baps in the evening. The afternoon tea was great, as soon as people finished up one thing they brought out more platters of sarnies, scones, mini cakes and so on til everyone was totally stuffed!

Afternoon tea was around 4ish, evening food about 8.30pm but can't remember the times for sure. We catered for full amount of guests and it was the right thing to do as although most of our day guests had been totally full, everyone wanted to try a hot meat bap. Some of the blokes had seconds and thirds, and the evening guests had loads too. We served literally just the meat and bread, then had onions, stuffing and apple sauce on the side.

    Hi,

I love the idea of an afternoon tea as something really different but I am biased as thats what we are having too! In the evening we are having a fish and chip van and catering for 100% of people and if some people dont eat it then im sure others will go up for seconds! I also think good idea to let people know they are having afternoon tea instead of a full sit down meal so they dont starve all day making room for it - thats what we are going to do anyway :-) Kez
