Evening food - Good idea or waste of money?

Amy, 10 October, 2024 at 14:07 Posted on Planning 0 17

I am undecided on whether or not to have food in the evening at our wedding. I believe that people will be focused on getting drunk and the food will go to waste but some people have said its nice to have a nibble when you've been out at all day and are dancing off your dinner from earlier. Any advice?

I think it's best to provide something as people may be hungry, plus if any guests only attend the evening they'll need something. I think after celebrating and dancing most people will need something. Although I guess depends what time your meal is being served during the day?

It depends on timing and how long your wedding is lasting - if you're packing up just a couple of hours after the meal finishes, then you can probably get away without, but if you are planning on 4-5 hours of post-meal celebration, then you really do need to provide something.

This assumes all your guests are invited for the whole thing, but it's even more important to provide food if you are having some evening-only guests. Plus, of course, unless your guest list is strictly limited to party animals, not everyone will be focussing on getting drunk - and you may have some guests who don't drink at all for a variety of reasons.

Lets start with a typical 2pm wedding at a venue with a sit down meal.

2.30 out with drinks, 4 pm call in for food 3 courses with speeches / coffee brings us to 6.30. Then typically the evening food will be served at 9pm - so that's 2.5 hours after main food was eaten ( ok coffee drank).

So that's 1.5 hours mingling drinks and photos after ceremony and allowing 2.5 hours food service and 3 speeches - remember a call in for food at 4pm - means that by the time everyone has had a last fag or gone to the loo - gone to the bar - sauntered in and got seated - - couple announced in then it can easily be 4.30 before you have your first course in front of you.

But yes have some sort of snacks out for people in the evening but unless you have extra evening guests you do not need much unless you have a very early wedding and sit down.

Thats actually really helpful for a timeline point of view too. We have a 1:30pm ceremony, cocktail hour after and then sit down about 4pm. Everyone is coming to the whole day/evening hence why I wasn't sure if it the main meal would be enough but I think I will have a little something in the evening with this in mind. Thank you for your help Smiley smile

Yes so your day is just 1/2 behind my timeline. The service time and getting people in to eat ect also depends on how many people you have. Also people always go literally from the times stated but do not allow for people to actually move around, its not their fault - why would they know but after many years and over 1,000 weddings I have a developed a "real world" timeline.

Can you provide some but not for all guests? We’re catering for about 3/4 in the evening, but if you have something like a buffet or cheese it could be for less. I think with drinking and dancing, it could get a bit messy without some food available later on. Equally, it costs a lot and it’s your wedding!!

Yesterday, my dad was fixing his bike in the garage. Thought I’d find a site to play while we chatted. Checked 1win , and it’s got bets and slots, nice and clear to use. The welcome deal’s cool, plus random perks or cashback if you keep going, so you get more chances. For sure, it was a neat add-on to our time tinkering around.

Evening food at events like weddings or parties can feel like a luxury — but is it really worth it? The answer depends on your guests and the vibe you're going for.

    Good Idea if :

    • The party runs late (people will get hungry again).

    • Guests are drinking (food soaks it up!).

    • You want a relaxed, fun touch (pizza, sliders, chips — always a win).

    Waste of Money if:

    • The main meal was huge and late.

    • Party wraps up early.

    • It's expensive for what you get.

    Verdict?

If your evening crowd = drinkers, dancers, and night owls → evening food is a smart move.
If it's a chill, early night crowd → maybe skip it and save the cash.

Totally get where you’re coming from—I've seen weddings where evening food barely got touched, and others where guests were hovering around the snack table all night. If your dinner’s early or the party goes late, having a light option like sliders or pizza slices can actually be a hit. Maybe go for something easy and budget-friendly so it doesn’t feel like a waste either way.

I know exactly what you mean—some weddings have barely any takers for evening food, while others see the snack table swarmed until the last dance. If the main meal’s on the earlier side or the celebration stretches late, having something light like mini sliders or pizza can really work in your favor. Just keep it simple and budget-conscious, and choose items that fit easily into the overall menu without feeling like an afterthought.

If you're planning a wedding and considering evening food options, Culver's menu offers a variety of affordable and satisfying choices that could be perfect for your guests. Their Value Baskets include options like ButterBurgers, chicken tenders, and fish sandwiches, each served with a side and drink, making them convenient for late-night snacks . For lighter fare, items such as cheese curds, crinkle-cut fries, and fresh frozen custard are also available . These selections can help keep your guests energized and happy without adding significant costs to your wedding budget.

Evening food isn’t a waste at all especially when it’s something comforting like a Costa coffee with a light snack. After a long, tiring day, it’s a smart way to relax and recharge without spending too much.

Eating out in the evening can feel like a treat, especially at places like Olive Garden where you get hearty meals, great taste, and even unlimited breadsticks. It’s not a waste if the food is filling and worth the price. A well-priced, delicious dinner can be the perfect end to your day. https://theolivegardenmenu.com/
