Evening food...help/ideas/opinions needed

*Bea*, 14 February, 2011 at 18:52 Posted on Planning 0 17

I have nearly got the wedding breakfast and canapes sorted and am now starting to think about food in the evening.

My trouble is I have a massive aversion to 'brown' buffets. OH really likes antipasta and suggested that we try and work this in to the evening food somehow.

So at the moment I am thinking about having an Antipasta selection something along the lines of this :

Selection of breads (italian /rustic)

Olives

Salami meats etc

Stuffed peppers

Breadsticks

Houmus

Cheeses

Greek Salad/Med Salad

Pate

Mozzarella and Tomato Salad

But keep drawing blanks - i want to make sure there is enough for vegetarians ...

And also want to make sure it looks more like this ..

.

Than this...

I am trying to find pics online of what i want it to look like to show the caterer and come up with a list of ideas.

Do you think this would be ok? If you were a guest what would you like?

Any help/ideas/comments would be good

TIA

I am a veggie and what you have sounds nice to me... maybe make sure there is some feta cheese?

Could you have some coloured pasta cone (coloured with tomato or basil or something) with a veggie filling? Or possibly a mint flavoured pasta cone filled with a fresh pea and feta mixture

It's not my style of food at all - i'd prefer the beige buffet items - 😄 but I am a complete weirdo with food!! My guests would very much go for what you've suggested and I think it would look great.

Here are some insiprational items i've googled.

Sounds yummy. Cheeseboards and good quality fresh bread are always a hit too and as long as you get blue cheese not *all* that yellow ?

We're no getting married until 4 so having a 3 course sit down meal then at 9:30 we're having sausage and 'Faken' butties (my OH is jewish!), and kind of a breakfast thing with toast and hashbrowns etc

    Oh and a candy buffet!!

Loving the look of some of those buffets though lovely!

Could you make it a med inspired buffet rather than just Italian? That way you could choose some Greek meze dishes (dolmades spring to mind here...and stuffed peppers, peppers in olive oil and garlic etc spanakopita) and maybe some tapas, too? This would give you loads of variety

Def my favourite type of food. For more inspiration take a sneaky peak at caterers menus that specialise in Italian/Med/Middle Eastern (in particularly Lebanese food) also check out some of the buffet pics on google for the brucnges/buffets in Dubai - they're fab. Have had a look in my pics but unfortunately don't seem to have any food pics.

One of the things I've noticed in all the buffets is the presentation - would be nice if you could get some nice serving plates to put everything on - try ebay for Moroccan inspired dishes - they're usually nicely coloured and could be used again ....... and again.

I wouldn't worry too much about the veggies - there's shortage of meat! You only have 2 meat item - pate and cold meats - so I think your balance is more towards the veggie side. But I guess most meat eaters will also eat cheese and salad. Personally I would be happy with that if I'd have a big 3 course Wedding Breakfast, but would seem a little skimpy if I hadn't.

You caterer may have some photos of what they have done before so you can see their standard presentation. But I can't imagine any caterer worth their salt doing the whole 'sausage rolls on foil trays' thing unless you specifically ask them to!

I think it sounds fabulous, stupidlamb! I hate the 'mum's-gone-to-Iceland-beige-buffets' too.

As long as you get a good mix of meat v veggie stuff, you'll be fine.

I think it sounds lovely! Far better than sausage rolls and chicken nuggets. My FSIL calls it "orange food".

I am looking at doing something similar. I want a buffet I can enjoy eating myself, and I don't eat sausage rolls, or quiche, and I can't stand little sandwiches where you think "oh that looks like cheese" and it turns out to be chicken. ?

I am thinking bread, cheese, cold meats (which I won't eat, but I know others will), salads, etc. Our venue has a buffet on the options that is along these lines, but I may steal some of your ideas now!

    A great choice!

We are having a very multi-coursed meze type meal.

I would seriously suggest you add cheeses, slices. You can make great colours and textures with slices of cheese and salami.

You also need kababi, small sausage shaped things, that are much more like a hamburger. And Zelnik, small filo pastries. We are having Zelnik with Feta and Spinach, Pork and Ajvar (pepper paste) and Lamb and mint

    Stuffed vine leaves!

Chillis will also add lots of colour, as will slices of lemon, beetroot and eggs
Fried Aubergines also add plenty of colour and are lovely

I'd also add a bean salad, Russki salata and a Greek salad.
And Zelka, a simple salad of sliced cabbage is a must.

Then how about some fish? Or octopus / squid?

    and maybe couscous?

Its all actually very simple and cheap to make, but extremly tasty.

We have decided to opt for a BBQ. We are having a summer wedding and the hotel offer this option so i thought it would be nice to be outside. i couldnt warrant a buffett style evening food as i have been to many weddings where it does not get eaten, with the BBQ they will cook until we are all stuffed!! :-)

? i couldnt of put it better CB!

Thanks everyone for your ideas and, lots of yummy suggestions which i have added to my list

It will a served in evening with red wine and port etc and will be in addition to canapes and a 3/4 course sit down wedding breakfast so no worry about shortage of food ?

I will make sure balance of meat and vegetarian options are balanced out , the salami etc was meant to cover all different types of meat ( just couldnt be bothered to type them all out )

Our caterer is good so am sure she will come up with plenty of ideas, i just wanted to get it straight in my head and see what people thought as i havent had this at a wedding before so wanted to check people would be happy with it .

    Thanks again
