Evening guest space

Hayley, 8 August, 2021 at 14:30 Posted on Etiquette and Advice 0 8
Hello all,

First time poster. So, we are having a relatively small ceremony and wedding breakfast with around 45 people. We are having the ceremony at a registry office then going to my family farm for the reception. We are hiring a marquee, tables and chairs (along with other things of course) with space for 60. However, we will likely have about 100 evening guests, including those who are there for the whole day. I was just wondering what your thoughts are on what space we will need for tables and chairs for the evening? Will everyone need a table and chair? We will have a small bell tent and outside straw bale seating as well. However, we'd like to prepare for rain. Thanks for your help.

Our venue is too small for us to have seats for day guests in the evening let alone extra ones for evening guests! They will move the tables after the meal to make space for the dance floor. I think, as long as you’ve got some seats to rest between dances/for the older generation, that will be fine - definitely don’t think you need a tables and chairs for everyone. Certainly I’ve been to other weddings where they’ve done that and it’s worked well.

Thank you Jane, that's good to know. I wonder if there's some kind of maths to it? Do you know how many chairs and/or tables you'll have with how many guests?

Erm, I really don’t know! We’re being guided by the venue/physical space available but I think we’ll go from 6 tables (with 10 on each) to 2 or 3 (but maybe with more seats). I might see about some chairs around the eye of the room too as people won’t need a ‘place’ like they will for the formal meal (well, I certainly hope they won’t!). We’ve also got some seats in the bar area and then some hay bales outside (weather permitting). If the weather is awful then our venue does have another room we can use but it’s a couple of minutes (outside) walk from the bar/dance space so I hope we won’t need it!

Sorry not to be more help - I almost don’t want there to be a formula that we ‘ought’ to follow as physical space is limited!! I guess one thing to think about is the age/mobility of your guests. My dad and my future grandparents in law will be the oldest there but I doubt they’ll be staying for the whole evening!

Thank you Jane. I am thinking having a venue with planners would have been so much easier! Are you having evening guests or are they the same guests all day?

We have 50 in the day and 120 for eve, our planner has said eve tables will be about 50% of day tables as people will be at the bar, dance floor etc so I should think you will be fine.

Thank you all. Good to hear what others are doing. We messaged the marquee company to ask for some advice too 🙂 x
