Family things to do in and around Stansted Mountfitchet?

cjb, 25 July, 2008 at 17:47 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

Do any of you knowledgeable hitchers have suggestions?

We are looking to spend some time there over the summer as Bishops Stortford and surrounding area is on our potential 'places to live' hit list.

Does anyone know the area well, and can suggest things to do there or nearby for families with children under 10? And restaurants/pubs with good gardens or play areas?

Thanks guys - I'm off to see what Google says!

There's a castle - and I also believe there's a toy museum in Stanstead Mountfitchet. Not sure about the surrounding areas.

Thanks for the Orly - I've just had a look at the castle on google actually - looks pretty good.

Now just need a family pub for afterwards!

We took our children to the toy museum and castle last summer, dont take a puschair if you can help it, it is very hilly and rough terain, we had a Loola and it was very difficult to push it. the toy museum is up a long path with some stairs and boast x amount about sea level(i cant remember the number but it was very high)

I live a few miles out from stansted, it is a lovely area that H and i are hoping to move to in the near future.

Waaaah! I live there! Personally, I think the castle is a bit boring, but that might just be me. Mole Hall is about 10-15 minutes drive away and that is really good for families. Even better if the weather is good.

Audley End is really nice too.

If you do go to the castle and need a children's play area after, then there is a playground on the Recreation Ground which is good.

The *** pub is quite family friendly I'm led to believe and has a little garden too. The Rose and Crown on the other side of Stansted (Bentfield Green) is also nice and family friendly.

If you don't want to stray too far from the Castle side then the queen's arms/head i think is nice toO AND HAS A GARDEN. oops.

    hth.

Thanks for the advice on hills - youngest child is 4 now so only uses a buggy when I want her to (!) but it's good to have a heads up that there might be some carrying going on!

Thanks for spelling out the pub Mrs James - I had no clue what is could be and was thinking of some very wild names!

We've been around the area a few times and really think Bishops Stortford/Mountfitchet/Elsenham might tick the boxes, so a few expeditions are planned over the summer hols.

Mole Hall is near there somewhere and is fantastic. You can feed the dear and ducks.

Oooh i love feeding the deers at mole hall wildlife park and and H go there in the winter and just feed the deers without actually going into the park properly. out of season its lovely and quiet and there is just an honesty box to pay for the deer food etc.

the 2 willows pub in Birchanger (close to M11 junction at stortford) is a lovely pub, realy good food but it popular so you need to book in advance.

i moved to stortford from east london 6 years ago as H is from near here and really love it now.
