Faulty Engagement Ring

samarajane, 1 March, 2021 at 11:17 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 2

Hi! We got engaged last Feb and he proposed with a temporary ring, so we ordered a new one in March. In September one of the prongs snapped and the diamond fell out. Luckily I found the diamond, contacted the store, and they repaired it no problem. Yesterday, the diamond fell out again as one of the prongs had snapped. I was just at home sitting on the sofa, I hadn't knocked it or anything like that, I just looked down and the diamond had fallen out. I've emailed the store again and told them I didn't really want it repairing as I'm wary that this will only happen again, and basically all they have said is that I will need to pay for this to be repaired this time and that they will give me a quote for this once I've sent it back to them. I haven't even had it 12 months and this has happened twice already. I'm really careful with it (especially after it already happening once), I never wear it for bed, I take it off when I shower etc, and I work at a desk all day so I don't do anything that would break it. Can anyone advise on what I can do, as I'm just not sure what my rights are with something like this. Thank you.

Hiya! Do you have a pic of it? Which metal is your ring made from and how big is your stone? If the claws have snapped it could be that they're not thick enough for the stone or are maybe snagging on your clothing? I tend to thicken up claws for bigger stones or even add 6 claws for extra security.
Another thing it could be is if the claw has broken in the same place on the same claw it might not have been attached securely enough.

My opinion would be that engagement rings are supposed to be made to last and if it hasn't lasted past 12 months how is it supposed to last for years to come!

Hi, this is a picture of it now (the top prong is snapped). It's 9k white gold. It's not a very big stone but I've always thought that the prongs don't look like they hold the diamond in securely, they're not like "claws" holding it in place like others, so I've always been very wary of the diamond falling out, but I figured they know better than me lol, but this has happened twice now in the space of 5 months and like you say, they're meant to last, so I just don't really want to pay for this to be repaired when it's likely to happen again.
