Fifty shades of grey

MrsShep, 10 February, 2015 at 18:55 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 76

I have never read the books, but the film coming out has sparked this up again. I've just seen a very interesting post on Facebook that I can't copy across on my phone but suffice to say it was a very strong reaction.

So ladies, opinions please!

I read the books and I'll be going to see the film. I don't class it as porn and I don't find it at all offensive I would consider it all a bit of (perhaps dark) humour.

Youngest daughter was reading an interesting article that was written by a woman who is a part of a BDSM community and she was stating that parts of the book were nothing more than rape. The 2 instances that she mentioned were that the female was given alcohol to loosen her inhibitions and that even when she used her safe word he continued. Interesting? I've never read the books and I won't be watching the film either, I'm no prude but it just doesn't interest me.

I thought the books were an absolute pile of tripe & didn't get what the fuss was about.

I read the first book and some of the second then I gave up. I am not sure how the book got so popular to be honest because there are better "love" stories out there and certainly stories with more and harder core sex in them. I put "love" in inverted commas because I didn't find the romance story particularly comfortable between the lead characters. Not sure spanking etc is particularly new as it was written about in 'Fanny Hill' and that's donkey's years old. We writing about it before that too no doubt.

I won't be rushing out to watch the film. Heard from someone at work though that there has been a rush on pre-booking cinema tickets. It all sounds a bit too like 'Eyes Wide Shut' and I don't plan on wasting hours of my life watching that again!

Good lord no. The books are insulting to those in bdsm relationships and give a false impression of what a respectful sub/dom relationship involves. It's very damaging to the community. Blergh.

I've never read the books but have read descriptions of events that happen and it seems to just be a highly physically and emotionally abusive relationship, which has nothing to do with BDSM. I find it extremely uncomfortable that this is being glamourised.

I love reading erotica but couldn't get more than 20 pages into the book. It is so badly written! Load of old crap. A group of school Mums I am friends with are going to see it and are tee hee heeing about it on Facebook messenger and irritating me.

I read 2 pages and found it painfully bad. The writing is terrible. No idea how it became such a huge hit.

i also read the article that indicated some if the sex is less than consensual. It's a sad state of affairs when a book that includes rape is promoted as a love story! Makes me hugely uncomfortable. Having said that I havn't read the book

wont go see the film. It looks shite.

Without wanting to be rude to anyone but I find that the only people who actually enjoyed 50 Shades are people that don't read that often.

    I love the books.

I read absolutely wank books though so this isn't a surprise. I probably won't see the film though as ive never once seen a good adaptation of any hook ive read as a film.

We'll be going to see the film. It's just a bit of fluff, people should really lighten up. The way the world has reacted to it, you'd think it was a ground breaking or life changing subject. it's just silly love story with a bit of kink thrown in, it really doesn't matter how accurate a portrayal it is of the way some people choose to have sex - it's not claiming to be a documentary or educational.

And claims of rape!? I've read the first book, that's rubbish!

Well, BDSM is not always just the way people choose to have sex. For some, it's a full-on lifestyle. There are people that are dom/sub 24/7. But yeah...I think rape is a tad strong, but it's certainly dubious. But I guess the world won't come to a halt if these people are misunderstood or misrepresented. People just don't like that stuff.

I actually quite enjoyed the books. Yes they are incredibly poorly written and quite repetitive but most of the stuff I read is generally crap chick-lit anyway!

I will be seeing the film with my girly friends at some point but we're not racing to see it this weekend.

I'm well aware of BDSM and the types of relationships - I'm very close with someone who has a full time mistress who isn't his 'partner' ... my perception/opinion is that it's very much about sex, whether they're having intercourse or not ... that's my opinion though, I know there are many who would argue that I'm wrong.

I got through the first book but couldn't make it through the second, I just found the story boring and predictable. I think in parts it did go too far and felt more like an abusive relationshp that a loving one.

I read the books after much encouragement from my friend. I thought it was OK as a light read. It wasn't the best book that I have ever read and it probably wasn't the worst.

My friend wants to go to the cinema to see the film, im less enthusiastic to rush and pay to see something that will probably just be OK. I will probably wait until she gets it on DVD and borrow it Smiley winking

Read all three - I found the writing ('oh my' x1000) more offensive than the content. Will probably watch when it come out on Sky.

Never read them and don't want to.

I'm a big reader but all I heard about the books was how badly written they were so it put me off. Also won't be going to see the film as (amongst other reasons) although I haven't read the books Jamie Dornan doesn't seem 'strong' enough for the character.

I found that a lot of the people that read them were that call themselves 'yummy mummies,' they all seemed to be sniggering behind their hands about it like school girls.

In my office yesterday morning, someone came in and said the staff at B&Q have been told not to be judgemental of people who come in to buy cable ties, rope, curtain rings etc etc. Apparently they have stocked up ready for the release of Fifty Shades of Grey. There was at least an hour of giggling and sniggering and squawking and blushing. "Well, what I want to know if what on earth you could do with a curtain ring!" one said.

I'm a lesbian and I know the answer to that.
