Fine line between an intimate wedding and a boring wedding?

Ettie, 23 January, 2020 at 11:39 Posted on Planning 0 5

Hi guys. Just looking for some input from people who've been to a small wedding of 30-40 people.

We want the day to suit us (casual, low-key), but don't want our guests to be bored. We are hosts after all.

Please point out any flaws etc in the plan! Please imagine you're a guest at our wedding. Here's how the day would run.

10am - Ceremony

11am(ish) - Drinks reception

12pm - Wedding breakfast

1pm - Short "thanks for coming" speech, more drinks and mingling

2pm - Cut the cake

3pm - Wedding is over.

Would you feel rushed? Bored? Or is this acceptable?

Basically partner and I want to spend the rest of the day alone. The wedding will be in the city centre so guests can easily take themselves out for drinks etc afterwards at a nice pub or bar.

Also looking for advice on whether restaurant receptions are boring or ok?

It sounds perfect to me! Weddings can be a long day for guests but this sounds good to me.

I think it sounds great - nice and relaxed and you should have time to have a proper catchup with all your guests - I've found it very frustrating in the past to travel hours to get to a wedding and then barely had chance to say 'hi' to the bride because there is so much going on and there are so many people.

We're having a wedding for 30 starting with an 11am ceremony and we're having the reception at a country inn, aiming to leave late afternoon, so quite similar to yours. The only thing I would check is that you have left enough space for your photos. Depending on how long your ceremony is and how far the ceremony venue is from the restaurant, two hours between ceremony start and meal may not be long enough for the photos. It would be worth showing your timeline to your photographer just to check.

You're right, I did consider the time set aside for photographs, but I agree that I did not budget enough time for this.

    That's solid advice. I'll re-think the timeline!

If it is a civil then allow 1/2 hour for the the ceremony and everyone being outside mingling. = 10.30

Then add 1.45 hour drinks mingle and wedding photos = 12.15

Call people in for wedding breakfast at 12.20 - actually finally all seated for 12.30

Service will be in full swing by 12.45

1 hour for the wedding breakfast may be a little tight so 2.15pm for the Short "thanks for coming" speech,

15 min should cover that = 2.30 cake cut at 2.40.

If that is the end of your wedding then allow extra time for final goodbyes

In addition to what the others have said, my main concern is that there isn't time to eat the cake! I think you'll find people leave after the speeches, or after the cake cut. If you want to serve the cake I'd bring the cake cut further forward in the programme.
