First dance music

Allgold78, 10 January, 2011 at 22:53 Posted on Planning 0 14

Ok, one last thread before I go get some beauty sleep.

When I went to a friend's wedding she had With or without you by U2 as her wedding dance. I want a big power ballad like that for mine but can't think..... Suggestions please people ?

Lonestar works well, I play it at many Weddings and still think its a lovely song.

It's also worth thinking about the last song - and Time of my Life has it all and is perfect for couples to dance too, and also very well known.

    Other ballads you might consider;

    • I don't wan't to miss a thing (Aerosmith)
    • You Are So Beautiful (Joe Cocker)
    • Have I Told You Lately? (Rod Stewart)
    • I'll Stand By You (The Pretenders)
    • Nobody does it better (Carly Simon)
    • She (Elvis Costello - also on Notting Hill Soundtrack)

This is a very personal decision, you may think of some films that you've both watched and a great song is played in the final scene! This may not work if your movie choice is horror!

If you're a U2 Fan, then "One" is a great tune, but the lyrics may not be suited - but its your Wedding!

    Maybe:-

Can't Help Falling In Love - Elvis Presley
Everything I Do - Brian Adams
Groovy Kind Of Love - Phil Collins
    I Don't Want To Miss A Thing - Aerosmith
Take My Breath Away - Berlin
    Wonderful Tonight - Eric Clapton

What does the other half want?

    All great suggestions!

How about 'Always' by Bon Jovi or 'Heaven' by Bryan Adams? Both lyrically great for a first dance and definitely fit in to the 'power ballad' category.

Also, check out my top ten first dance songs article. It's the most popular songs I get asked for for first dances so ther won't anything original in there - might give you some ideas though ?

    For some more "indie" suggestions,

Iris - Goo Goo Dolls (if you don't know this song, it's beautiful, I would Youtube it if you haven't heard it.. We are using this as we play this all the time when we first met)

Run or Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol

I'm Yours or No Stopping Us - Jason Mraz

    Love Song - The Cure

Nothing Compares to You - Sinead O'Connor

Linger - The Cranberries (lyrics might put you off, but the song is great... The music itself would be a good interlude during a ceremony)

H2B hates my Radiohead collection, so I daresay we won't be playing any of that...

Well I think power ballad may not be the right words but big rock ballad or something like that. Always would be brilliant because I am the BIGGEST Bon Jovi fan and I think OH would find it funny that I had squeezed a little bit of Jon into our day, lol. I don't see myself dancing to that one but you're on the right lines there. I dont want something that everyone else has had (sorry - no offence meant to anyone) which is why I liked that U2 song. The hunt continues then........

I'm having the 'tale as old as time' song from beauty and the beast. I watched the film the other day and it made me cry thinking about dancing to it at the wedding.

There are a couple of websites out there recommending good power ballard wedding songs, check out u tube aswell. Bryan Adams, that song from robin hood, (every thing i do), was voted the best one and that everly brothers version of unchained melody was a biggie too.

Hmmm, I think my problem is that I want something different, something that hasnt been done to death at other weddings.

Love your choice - nice and original.

Few random suggestions from when I was planning....

Elbow - one day like this is a fantastic first dance song (we used it in our wedding)

Iris by the Goo Goo dolls is another one

How about Starship - Nothings Going to stop us now

Or something like Robbie Williams - she's the one?

Went to a wedding recently where the Grooms name was Jones, so they had Me & Mrs Jones, was really sweet!
