First dance. Yes or no?

Hayley, 20 June, 2022 at 07:58 Posted on Etiquette and Advice 0 6
So, we are now wondering if we'd rather not have a first dance. It's really not very us. Neither of us particularly enjoy dancing, or being the centre of attention. The only issue is we put "arrive by 6.45 if you don't want to miss cutting the cake and first dance". Think it matters if we now don't have one? Eep.

You could maybe do a very short one - I went to a wedding recently where the bride and groom danced for maybe the first 30 seconds of the song and then everyone else was ushered onto the dance floor to join them Smiley smile

Thank you. We did have a song in mind. But it would be recorded. We then have 2 bands playing. Maybe we should work with the first band to get us then others up...

You didn't specify first dance would just be you! It could just be the start of the party!

I think it's fine to skip it. Or if you're worried about upsetting the traditionalists, why not have your whole wedding party on the floor for the first dance? And only give it a minute or so before throwing the floor open to everyone.

I would completely scrap the idea if you and your husband don't want to do it, it's your day and that's it.

If you are worried about what people might think as it was on the invitations maybe just have the very start of the dance just you two then invite everyone else to join. Or get it announced from the start that you'd like to share the first dance with friends and family.

I also think a lot of people will forget that line from the invitation, most people just focus on the important details like where/when.

Brilliant, thank you. It feels more us to not have one. Maybe just ask the first evening band to make an announcement that we don't wish to dance alone so instead invite everyone to the dance floor, to save any confusion 😊
