I know it's boring, but start off with a budget! Work out the maximum you want to spend (and I'd really encourage you not to go into debt for it - because however special your wedding is, it is just one day, and you don't want to start off married life with a ton of debt!). Then assign your budget in order of importance - and don't forget to include the cost of the getting married legally bit! You also need to work out a rough guest-list, because the number of guests is going to affect both the size of venue and also the cost of catering. (And when it comes to budgeting, be ruthless about cutting out anything that isn't important to you - you don't have to have a specific thing for your wedding just because everyone else does!)

When booking start off with the venue - because you can't book vendors until they know when and where the wedding will be. I'd probably prioritise photographers after that - because the photographs are going to be your permanent reminder of the day, so you want to make sure you can book a photographer whose work you really like. Also, a lot of venues and photographers get booked up a couple of years in advance on popular dates.

It's also worth making a list of stuff you need to buy and keeping an eye out for good deals or sales. For example, we got 1/4 off the price of our wedding rings by waiting for a sale before we bought them.

Find a checklist - I think Hitched has one - it certainly did when we were planning our wedding, but if not, there are loads online. You don't have to have everything that is included on these lists, but they are useful guides to prevent you forgetting anything you do want to have.

Take it step by step - you have loads of time to plan and prepare, and you'll be fine.

Couldn't agree with the above comment more, definitely start with the budget. It is INCREDIBLY daunting at first, but ensure to take deep breaths and take it steady.

It can be really easy to get caught up and want to get everything done at once once you get on a roll, but try not to. We're 9 months into planning and I'm realising a couple of things I missed by worrying they needed to be booked too soon. That being said- after the budget I'd recommend then looking at venue's (as it's important to consider what they might include and what might be extra costs). Then have a think about guests- guest experience is such an important factor. Something that really helped that I did was write who we were fairly sure we wanted and then break it down by age group/likely to dance/likely to drink/likely to leave early/stay late. This really helped inform a few decisions.

Lynea D'Prix has a really good digital or written guide you can do with your partner and make an evening of it which I think is also really helpful. It asks questions you don't always think about and makes a good starting point.

    Hope it goes well!
