Fixtures & fittings - is it the done thing to haggle?

allymc, 3 March, 2009 at 13:34 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

We're in the process of buying a house and we asked the vendor to give us an idea of how much they would be looking for to leave behind cutains, curtain poles, window blinds, stairgates and a fireguard. For a 5 bed house they've come back with an itemised list and are asking £350 for the lot. I don't feel that's too bad at all, although some of the curtain poles aren't great and not all the curtains are to my taste, they'd be a start for us as we currently live in a flat with wooden shutters so have absolutely nothing to take with us. H seems to think we should go back and negotiate. The thought hadn't even crossed my mind.................is haggling 'the norm'? ?

May i be blunt? i will anyway.

dont insult them. presumably the house itself is well into six figures, and youre quibbling about 350 quid? ?

I don't know about the 'norm' but I'd work out in my head if it sounded reasonable or not, and then either go back with a reduced offer or agree to the price they're asking.

If you have nothing to take with you, having curtain poles and curtains already in place are a huge bonus, in my opinion!

For £350? I think you've got a bargain, TBH. I agree with Nick. I know I'd be insulted if I was knocked down.

If I was selling a 5 bed house and asked for only £350 for all that you mentioned and someone quibbled - I'd take them all with me!

Think how much it would cost to replace them for a house that size

? ooh yes, do talk him out of it ?

I am that petty though, when we sold our house a couple of years back, the people buying really really messed us around; they picked up our house for a bargain as we had a buyer drop out right at point of exchange, so we agreed these new sellers could have a deal in order to keep the chain going, so long as they were quick with their side of things,

they dragged their feet, had a crap solicitor and then the day before exchange wrote me a long fax, detailing why they wanted me to drop the price by a further 15k (they already had 15k off asking price) and a list of reasons why they thought they should get it cheaper, ranging from 'there's a disused water tank in the loft, we want you to remove it (I was 8 months pregnant) or we'll charge you) to a list of things they wanted thrown in free, including our lawnmower and washing machine and tumble drier.

I went ballistic ( I was v hormonal) rang the EA and threatened to pull out (I meant it) and when we moved I'm ashamed to say I replaced an expensive chandelier that I was going to throw in free (also on their lists of wants) with a normal light fitting.

It got smashed in the move so ended up in the tip, but I was so cheesed off with how greedy they were I didn't care ?
