Flower Costs...

GeordieBarbie, 25 September, 2009 at 09:59 Posted on Planning 0 15

Hi

I'd always planned to make my own bouquet (just want a very simple gerbera hand-tied) with flowers from the market (10 for £2 - bargain!) but am now having a few doubts. Mainly as we're now not going to be married in the town where we live - but and hour and a bits drive away so will be spending the nightbefore the wedding in a hotel room meaning flower arranging may not be top of my list!

Can anyone give me a rough idea of how much they are paying for flower? The only guide I have to go on is what my friend paid for her flowers last year which is £1000!!! No way i'm paying that kinhd of money! That was for her bouquet (waterfall style) 3 bridesmiads (hand-tied roses with ivy), about 9 buttonholes, 10 table decorations and 10 hydranger buckets and roses (for the aisle).

What i'd be looking for is 2 simple gerbera bouquets and about 8 button holes (am still thinking I can buy the table decorations myself - just want a single gerbera in a vase).

Any guidance on price would be appreciated!

Thanks

I literally got a flower quote this morning myself!

Obviously, there is a lot of price fluctuation from place to place, let alone location but I have had two quotes for a handtied gerbera bouquet coming in at £18.

Button holes prices ranged from £2.75 to £4.

    Corsages from £3 to £10

    Hope that helps

I'm not sure how much this will help seeing as everyone wants different things, and this is only a very rough quote based on the consultation I had with my florist - but here it is anyway if it helps (also it's worth saying that this is the maximum for everything I'd like to pay, so if I can trim the cost down on some areas I will, once I've met with my florist again):

    Bridal bouquet - £80

    Bridesmaid bouquets x3 - £120

    x4 corsages - £25

    x10 button holes - £50

    Ceremony pedestal - £90

    Table centrepieces x9 - £300

    Top table decoration - £80

    x4 tulle ribbon pillar decoration - £80

    x5 tealights per table - £45

    x3 pots of table crystals - £6

    x3 boxes of dried petals - £10

    Total £886

If you decide to go down the road of doing your own bouquet, I would recommend avoiding gerbera as they are not the easiest of flowers to work with and require specialised conditioning because of their hollow stems. More oft than not, they need to be internally wired for support to stop them from flopping over. All fresh flowers need conditioning when they are bought from the market. You could try stronger more robust flowers such as hydrangea - buy them as plants and cut them when you need them - this works out cheaper. For a minimalistic bouquet of gerbera from a florist, you would be looking at around £20/£30 for 5/7 stems hand-tied with ribbon and leaves. Buttonholes vary from £2.75 to £6.00 depending on where you live and what you have in them. Hope that helps.

Our flowers came to about £600 I think for my bouquet, BM, 3 adult buttonholes, 1 pageboy button hole, 2 corsages, 2 large pedestals of flowers in the barn where we had our reception, swags on beams in the barn, flowers and swag on the cart in the barn, posey for top of cake and 1 top table decoration. Had some gerberas in pedestals but rest was orchids so probably not much help.

Even if you don't make your own bouquet you can definitely save on the centre pieces. I ended up buying orchids in these really nice pots from Tesco's, in their plant sale so got 8 of them for about £28! They were just perfect for our theme, venue. I remember seeing quite a few gerbera's in nice pots at the time too so that could fit in if you don't go for the vases (I think it was M&S that did the gerbera's). When I talked to my florist about table centres she quoted me £22 per bowl with one orchid head floating in it!

Hi RaeF - can I ask what sort of size your quote for gerbera's is? I'm getting quoted around the £50 mark for brides (15-20 flowers) and £30 for bridesmaids (10-12 flowers). Am considering getting myself a bridesmaid one and the bridesmaid more of small bouquet of 3 flowers (i'm a cheapskate!) ? Heehee!

    Certainly!

I'm having a small one so only 6-10 gerberas in the bouquet.

(And that's under duress; I didn't want one!)

If you're interested in silk flowers, Sherrie H does some beautiful ones (based on her Flickr site and positive recs from people on here). She's based in Bristol I think.

I just got my quote for flowers in this morning - £377 for the following:

    My bouquet

    2 BMs bouquets

    3 Buttonholes

2 Thank you bouquets for the Mums

1 long low arrangement for the Register Signing & Top Table

10 fishbowls filled with geberas & bear grass

Its roses and geberas I'll be having and the BMs will be having geberas only. I think the quote is still a bit expensive but it was just a starting point.

Also, the fishbowls will be cheaper to fill - she just gave a rough price for the purposes of the quote but I'll be getting my own fishbowls and she can give me a correct price once she know what size they are.

I think I can get the price down to around £350 or below cos I'm on a budget!!!!

    Thanks everyone!

Went to a wedding fayre in Bristol on Sunday and managed to speak to someone who sounded reasonable. Verbal quote was:

    Brides bouquet - £50

    Bridesmaid - £20 (about 6-8 flowers)

    Buttonholes - £1.50

    Corsages - £5

Fishbowls with floating gerbera head - £5

All in all I think it's coming out around £160 - slightly over my £100 budget but I think we'll probably do it. Have sent an email requesting a formal quote. One of the florists I found quoted from £55 for the bridesmaid bouquets!

Jeeeeeeeeeeez!! How on earth did you manage to dig this up??

Bit of a blast from the past. This was at the start of my planning when we were trying to work out a budget - just before we went to view the venue ?

    Awwww - memories! ?
