Fly tipping neighbour..WWYD?

Kazmerelda, 27 March, 2009 at 08:47 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

As the title says really!

For the last 3 weeks now we have had extra rubbish outside our house each week. We are careful, recycle and generally only have one bag of rubbish a week (sometimes 2 but rarely).

About 18 months ago we became a target for fly tippers where we seemed to have alot of salad items outside our house clearly from a take away. We reported it and it seemed to stop. Shortly after this our neighbour started leaving the odd bag out first thing in the morning outside ours instead of hers as she had too many bags (she does not recycle and for her and her husband they have at least 6 bags of rubbish a week), She stopped doing this once we said that we had reported fly tipping and the council were looking at the property.

However it has started again....last 2 weeks have been extra bags outside, and this morning there is now a pushchair and a large box! I have reported it again to the council obv but WWYD re neighbour? We believe it is her, there was an incident at Christmas as well where we actively saw her and her family putting rubbish outside our house. I have spoken to her about it, tried to help her recycle and generally said if they look into fly tipping she could be stuffed but I really don;t want to report her. She is a lovely neighbour, my biggest fear is that these extra goods are left outside our house and we get charged ourselves.

I am off to make bread so might not reply for a short while ?

I would let the council deal with it - you've informed them, there's nothing more you can do. Other than putting the rubbish back outside their house every time they leave it in front of yours!

Our next door neighbours used to put black binliners of rubbish onto the pavement days before collection and I always leave it right outside of their front door so they'd fall over it! They don't know it's me doing it (they may suspect) but frankly I don't give a toss. It's a house rented by a load of "professionals" who've never said two words to us since they moved in so I really don't care if this annoys them or not. It does seem to have done the trick ...

If she's doing that, then she's not a lovely neighbour. I would go round there again and tell her that her actions could cause you to be charged. Ask her to stop, and tell her that if she doesn't you'll have no option but to report her so that you don't incurr charges yourself. Tell her that's the last thing you want to do, and ask for her understanding.

What I don't understand is why you have to help her understand recycling?

    Thanks for your replies ladies!

CBH we did used to put it back outside but I dunno I felt it was abit tit for tat so stopped doing it.

Mrs Winkle, she is very stuck in her ways tbh and I have had numerous conversations with her on recycling and how easy it is (me) and her saying why should I bother (her). We have the people come round to talk to us about recycling and she just ignores them. We even offered to take her bottles, cans and things when we go to Tesco to recycle them to try and help but she said no she would throw them away.

I think I will go and talk to her again, I am really worried about being charged for this or one day the rubbish being left outside and us in trouble. I have reported it again to the council last time they sent someone round to monitor the area at certain times and this seemed to stop it happening.

Just tell her that you've reported it again and will continue to do so until it stops and/or the council find the culprit.

Maybe you could find out what the fine is for fly tipping and mention it to her, that may make it easier for her to stop!

Here's the official guidance and contact details from the Environment Agency:

    http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/waste/flytipping/37875.aspx

You can report it anonymously. I should think it will be taken very seriously, as local authorities have a lot of EU guidance on the issue of waste that they need to stick to.

We had a neighbour do this when we were putting our bag of rubbish out late at night, so we just stuck it back in front of his house. Although to be fair the binmen do usually take more than one bag if you do put it out.

However to stick an old buggy etc outside your house is just taking the pee really!

Thanks for that Flissy I did actually take photos this morning so that's good.

The rubbish has gone the binmen took the old buggy and box, the council have just rung me actually (wasn't expecting it to be that quick!) and reminded me that the school opposite has a security camera that is pointing towards our road. They are going to ask if they can take a look at this.

I tink the fine is quite high for fly tipping so I might try that track too.
