flying/hand luggage - what counts as liquid?

17 July, 2008 at 22:25 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 25

Sorry, stupid question but I can't find the answer on the virgin website - but in terms of make up, is eg concealer/powder/mascara liquid? I assume mascara is?

    Hmmm

when I flew last, even creams were taken as liquids.. so like antiseptic creams, etc..

    Mascara and concealer, yes.

All gels, pastes, liquids, fluids, mousses or creams.

Is that a powder? if so, it won't count. Just think 'is this wet?' and it should help you!

The mad thing is, from my experience you could have a huge tube of runny lip gloss in your pocket and they'd be none the wiser. I flew internally here in the US with my colleague who had a lighter in his pocket the whole time...

I wish they'd stop with this liquid thing though, it's inconvenient having to buy water after security when it's 7x more expensive..

I was told by a security man at Stansted that each passenger was allowed one cigarette lighter (just in my pocket). Lip gloss, hand cream, foundation etc., however, all had to go in the little ziplock. Bonkers.

We're flying soon and I hadn't even considered not taking any of my 'liquid' based make up in hand luggage, this is crazy. Can I not take food for the baby then?

You can take anything that is 100ml or under - I can't think of any make-up in bigger pots than that!

I just put all my make-up in the hold now. they're so inconsistent with what you can take / do. i was travelling with a baby and had put all his liquid paraphernaliain a ziplock bag which was fine. i had completely forgotten about make up and the security guy was going to take it all off me as i had no change to buy a $1 bag from the vending machine (or enough hands). some frustrated nice man saw me struggle and bought the bloody plastic bag.

sometimes, you can keep a baby in a papoose, sometimes you can't. it makes it very difficult to plan a trip. the security staff don't know half the time what's allowed.

On the subject of liquids etc will I be ok to take a little pot of vasaline? My lips get really dry on a flight and I don't want to get on my holibobs with cracked bloody lips!!

    Oh really, that's better news.

I have a little pot of vaseline too, it's under 100mls so should be fine. If you're worried you can stick it in your pocket.

Now, can someone come and do the mountain of ironing I have to get through in the next two days. Fanks.

    Hole

Gatwick is definitely only one piece of handluggage per person.

MRpod is going to look very fetching carry my large pink holdall when we fly next week as my hat box counts as my only allowed piece of handluggage. If they try and say the box is too big I'm going to have to wear the hat. Will look very lovely with my 9 hour flight outfit.

I have a little plastic zip lock that has been all over the place with me since all this palava started.

In it is a bottle of rescue remedy, pot of vaseline, little tub of moisturiser and decongestant nose spray.

Not all airports allow 2 pieces of handluggage - STN and LGW do not!

My vaseline was confiscated but I think that was a couple of years ago when you weren't allowed any liquid. I'm so happy I can take a handbag!

I flew out of Gatwick to Edinburgh a few weeks ago and had a handbag separate to my hand luggage - nothing was said. Mind you, they allowed OH's deodorant (spray) through, yet it was confiscated at Edinburgh on the way back for being >100 ml. I had no idea aerosols were included. Where can you get a spray deodorant <100 ml?

Ooh looks like I'm wrong about Gatwick. They must have lifted the one bag rule since I flew to Ireland in June. 2 bags agogo

The one bag rule has been lifted. All airports will now allow one carry on bag and/or a small handbag or laptop bag through security. However, you have to check with the airline as to what they will allow individually.

I'm flying BA out of Gatwick on Wednesday and I checked their website yesterday which said you can have a handbag and a piece of hand luggage.
