Folio Hotels gone into administration...

scarlett, 5 December, 2008 at 15:24 Posted on Planning 0 1

Hi....my friend was due to get married in May at Makeney Hall in Derbyshire, and has found out today that the company owning it are pretty much going down the pan. They own a huge number of hotels all over the UK - so I hope it's not affecting anyone else??

They've paid about £2K to the venue so far - does anyone know where they stand as far as getting money back goes??

TIA

Crap, we looked there as a venue but it was too expensive, glad we didn't know.

    Have they got insurance ?

    Hi Scarlett,

I had planned to get married in one of the Folio hotels as well. Luckily, my fiance's friend informed us of the group's prob but now we're sort of in a dilemma. We are at the very early stages of planning and haven't paid any money yet (except for wedding insurance - I never take out insurance for holidays and things so this must be a sign!!), so we could change our minds but after getting our plans ready and hopes up, I begrudge going somewhere else. The hotel's deal was better than any other I investigated too.

We are due to go give our notice of marriage on Tuesday so we need to make our minds up before then about what to do - tell the registrar we are getting married in the registry office (the most important part of the day and at least that won't be going anywhere!), then keep our fingers crossed that the hotel won't disappear. Or book somewhere else completely different (but to be honest, no hotel will be safe next year). Or sit tight and hope things will be OK with the original plan (the hotel's been there for years and has changed management many times so should survive another recession)?

Maybe I should do what my friend is doing - get hitched at the registry office, go to a nice restaurant for a meal, then go to the pub! At least it'll be cheaper!!

As for getting money back, as long as the hotel is being taken over, they should be OK - does their contract say anything about changes not affecting their booking? If she's paid by credit card, she'll be able to claim money back, but it's a long process. The hotel I've booked with is trading as normal and the group is hopeful that somebody will take it over. But in the present climate, it's risky business.

Hope your friend gets something sorted soon.

    C
