Food. And people who don't like what you've picked as the option.

Emma, 17 August, 2020 at 09:24 Posted on Planning 0 3
Hi everyone, I'm new to hitched so please bear with me! Ha.

I've got an interesting problem. So! We get married next July at a small venue near to us. The food options are fairly small, we've got canapés on arrival in place of a starter (but many choices of canapés so there'll be something everyone likes/can eat), main course will be chicken with veg, and dessert will have two options (chocolatey or fruit based). I have vegetarians coming to the wedding, and also one friend who is a bridesmaid who has complex eating habits but because she's my bridesmaid and mainly eats vegan because of dietary problems, I will make allowances.
In the evening we're having a hog roast, because its our wedding and we like it. My vegan bridesmaid already knows this and I've said that we'll do something separate that she'll be able to eat. Now my MIL came to me around a week ago and mentioned that my future SIL doesn't eat pork. She doesn't like it and will we be providing something that she does like? I might sound small minded but her mentioning this has irritated me. I'm kind of having a mindset of 'well, it's our wedding, we like it, and we've made allowances by having something in the day that everyone can eat'. I have a good relationship with my future SIL, so I'm confused why she hasn't just mentioned this to my husb to be and rather it's come from MIL. ?
Can people weigh in? Am I being petulant? I would prefer honesty, I haven't mentioned anything to my husband to be because I don't want to make it a 'thing'.

Hi, picky eaters can be frustrating and why not mention it before now or to you personally? but I wouldn't let it get to you. I am having a hog roast in the evening also for my wedding but there will be a veggie option as well and we have added some other picky bits and salads to the buffet so i'm sure everyone will be covered. Have you been advised about a vegan/veggie option alternative to the hog roast and would she eat that? Our option is Halloumi, falafel and mixed pepper skewers. I'm sure the caterer can do something ? for the day I have 2 main options and a veggie option and I have one person who only eats chicken nuggets, garlic bread, chips and margarita pizza! My caterer have been fine about him having his own meal (I just dont understand how someone can live on that alone! ?)

    Hiya

It’s always tricky knowing just where to draw a line and stick to your guns, isn’t it?

I’m a former National Trust wedding coordinator, and currently planning our own wedding. Like Sarah has mentioned, I would offer one (and one only) vegetarian alternative to the hog roast, otherwise you’ll have every Tom, Dick and Harry saying they can’t/don’t eat X,Y,Z, and it will drive you barmy!

The exception would be anyone with a known allergy or dietary requirement such as Diabetic, Coeliac or PKU (we have some of each!) Obviously those people would need to be made known to catering and waiting on staff, but if it’s just preference, well they can prefer to eat elsewhere and join you later,. After all, you are offering essentially two free (expensive) meals.

“Couple’s day, couple’s way!” (although don’t turn Bride-Groom-Zilla about it)!

Stick to your guns, AND your budget!

    Love

    Ali xx

I agree - unless someone has a genuine allergy, they eat what they're given or bring their own.
